NNEXUS
ENGINEERING
the impact of changing additives on the material compatibility . In GA9058, ethylhexanol
is added and polyether amine is Increased from 1 .5% to 10-20% .
Wetted components from the material manufacturers include the use of brass , PTFE ,
Nylon , 304, 305, 430F , 302 stainless steel , NBR (Buna-N ) , and Viton . Non -wetted
components , not in direct contact with the fluid , were excluded from the evaluation .
Published material compatibility was used to consider the interaction of ethylhexanol and
amine-based chemicals with the manufacturer materials listed as available . Polyether
amine is currently not documented in compatibility charts , However, in our engineering
judgement , polyether amine is an amine based chemical and was evaluated for material
compatibility as such . Additionally, it is a component in the current additive without
documented compatibility Issues , and the overall amount of the chemical once added to
gasoline is small , All of the non-metallic materials above are documented as compatible
with ethylhexanol .
Of the non-metallic materials , NBR (Buna-N ) is the least compatible with GA9058 as it
was found to have the least amount of chemical resistance to amine-based chemicals.
Lubrizol completed a soak test of Viton ( FKMA ) and Buna= N (Nitrile HNMII ) with 98880
GA9058 , and gasoline . Volume change, tensile strength , hardness, and elongation were
assessed . Results from the test show that a Viton seal soaked in the GA9058 additive
resulted in the same or improved performance for volume change , tensile strength , and
hardness when compared to the 9888 soak test results . There was an increase in percent
of elongation , however, GA9058 has a comparable Impact on elongation to that of
gasoline , Buna-N seals soaked in the GA9058 additive had the same or increased
performance in tensile strength , hardness , and percent of elongation . There was an
increase in volume change compared to the existing 9888 additive and gasoline .
Analyzing the data further shows that the increase in volume change is statistically
insignificant compared to the volume change of the gasoline sample .
Published literature states that 304 stainless steel is compatible with ethylhexanol and
amine-based chemicals; however, there is no data for 302 , 305 , 316 (with ethylhexanol ) ,
or 340F stainless steels , and brass . Per sound engineering judgment , it can be stated
that the other 300 series metals are similarly suitable for ethylhexanol and amine-based
chemicals .
Lubrizol completed metal soak testing on brass and bronze metal samples for 9888 ,
GA9058 , and gasoline. The soak test showed no significant difference in appearance
between the three liquids tested for bronze or brass , A slight decrease in weight of the
metal sample was identified with 100% of the GA9058 additive compared to 100% of
9888 additive . Considering the change in weight and time of exposure , the increase in
Amy M . Lee UJa
CH 6235
480 W . Mussel Dr . Suite # 250 Maumee .
