Biological Resources Evaluation Report
Griffith Energy Project
Scientific Common Federal State Status
Name Name Status /Other Habitat Potential to Occur*
Status
Amphibians
Medium. This species lives in vacant or mammal-
occupied burrows, such as California ground squirrel
burrows, during the estivation period (March-
November). They also require vernal pools or other
seasonal water sources for breeding.Within the 1.24-
mile radius assessed for potential breeding
ponds/pools,four potential breeding pools exist(Table
4). One pool was visited and determined to be a
potential CTS breeding pool and three potential
breeding habitats could not be observed during the
survey because they occur on private property. The
nearest known breeding site is 2 miles southwest from
Grassland, savanna, or open the Project site(CDFW 2021 a). CNDDB search results
woodland habitats. Can occur show that there are additional occurrences 3 miles east
in upland areas with of the project site from 2015 and 2016, and several
Ambystoma California tiger occurrences found along a road 3 miles north of the
small mammal burrows)w
califomiense salamander Threatened Threatened underground refuges s)within Project site in 2016(CDFW 2021 a). Ground squirrel
burrows in low-sloping areas are present on the Project
1.24 miles from a breeding site and provide upland refuges for CTS.Also, the soils
pond. on site are moist enough to support burrowing
amphibians, such as the slender salamanders observed
during the survey. While the Project site and
surrounding properties within the 1.24-mile radius
undergo annual grazing, this is generally thought to be
compatible with successful use by CTS(USFWS 2004).
Overall, lack of development south of the Project site
has resulted in relatively unimpeded potential CTS
migration from most potential breeding ponds in that
area. Therefore, the potential for this species to utilize
the Project site as upland dispersal habitat is medium.
CTS would not use the Project site as breeding habitat
given the lack of aquatic habitat onsite.
Tetra Tech, Inc. 5-18 July 2023
