ii. Gloves shall be worn during the cleanup procedure. If splashing <br /> is anticipated, protective face shield shall be worn in addition to <br /> an impervious gown or apron and fluid resistant boots. <br /> iii. Hand washing shall be performed by personnel after completion <br /> of the cleanup procedure. <br /> iv. Mops and/or cleaning cloths used to clean up a blood or body <br /> fluid spill shall be immediately considered soiled linen and shall <br /> not be used again prior to laundering. <br /> v. When using the Universal Spill kit for blood and/or other <br /> potential infectious material (OPIM) follow instructions on the <br /> spill kit and wear appropriate PPE. <br /> b. Cleaning up medical waste involving sharps or other materials: <br /> i. For spills involving glass or other sharps, a broom, dustpan and <br /> a sharps disposal container shall be used to pick up and dispose <br /> of any glass/sharps. <br /> ii. After the removal of any potential sharps,visible material shall <br /> be removed from the area by using a broom and dustpan to <br /> avoid contact with skin. The area should also be wiped dry with <br /> towels or other appropriate material. Materials saturated with <br /> blood or body fluids, which pose a risk, shall be disposed of in a <br /> red biohazardous waste bag. <br /> iii. Linen shall be placed in appropriate linen hampers to ensure the <br /> necessary laundry is treated as infectious and laundered <br /> properly. <br /> iv. After initial clean-up, perform final cleaning of the contaminated <br /> area by wiping up immediately with an approved cleaning <br /> disinfectant,which will be allowed a contact time of no less than <br /> 10 minutes. <br /> v. All spills, which include floor areas, shall be blocked off from <br /> traffic using "Wet Floor — Caution" signs and the floor shall be <br /> mopped with an approved germicide. <br /> vi. All spills on carpeted areas will be decontaminated using a <br /> carpet extracting machine and carpet sanitizer or disinfectant. <br /> Contact the Facilities Department for further instructions. <br /> vii. Spills from sharps containers should be cleaned up promptly <br /> using appropriate personal protective equipment. Needles or <br /> other sharps shall not be picked up or handled by hand. A <br /> broom, dustpan, mop, etc., shall be used to sweep up contents <br /> and place in an approved puncture-proof sharps container. <br /> Remaining blood or other body fluids will be wiped up <br /> immediately with an approved disinfectant, which will be allowed <br /> a contact time of no less than 10 minutes.
