It must be transported in a rigid approved container with a lid. <br /> Prior to placing the red bag into the waste transport container, make sure the bag is <br /> goose-neck or single-knot tied tightly to prevent potential leaks. <br /> a. Transport carts and containers will be cleaned as needed, using an <br /> approved disinfectant. <br /> 6. The integrity of biohazardous waste containers will be checked by trained staff. If a <br /> biohazardous waste container is found with compromised integrity (i.e.-cracked or <br /> broken),the container should be removed and disposed of properly. <br /> 7. Sharps waste (sharps containers) shall be collected when containers are 2/3 full. <br /> The fill line on each container denotes the acceptable filling capacity designated by <br /> the manufacturer. Upon reaching the fill line containers must be removed from use <br /> and placed in the appropriate biohazardous waste collection container. <br /> 8. DEA pharmaceutical waste (controlled substance) shall be sent to a state approved <br /> reverse distributor for disposal as defined in the SVMF Controlled Substance <br /> Purchasing, Handling, Storage and Recordkeeping Policy (PolicyStat ID 11841176). <br /> G. Storage <br /> 1. The pharmaceutical, pathology, medical & biohazardous waste storage area shall be <br /> secured to prevent or deny access by unauthorized persons and locked at all times. <br /> Warning sign(s) shall be posted on the outside of the bio-waste storage room door <br /> which say the following: <br /> a. "CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA — UNAUTHORIZED <br /> PERSONS KEEP OUT"; and in Spanish" CUIDADO-ZONA DE RESIDOUS — <br /> BIOLOGICOS PELIGOSOS PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO <br /> AUTHORIZADAS." <br /> b. This warning sign shall be readily legible during daylight from a distance of <br /> 25 feet. <br /> 2. Red biohazard bags will be placed as a liner in a rigid biowaste containers with tight <br /> fitting lids and appropriate biohazardous warning labels. Red bags shall meet the <br /> specifications set by the MWMA for tear/impact resistance with the following <br /> standards; ASTM D1709-97 and ASTM D1922-94a. Container types and storage <br /> requirements can be found in Appendix D. <br /> 3. Trace chemotherapy waste will be stored separately from all other types of medical <br /> waste when stored in the medical/biohazardous waste storage area. Trace <br /> chemotherapy waste will be stored in yellow DOT approved containers. All personnel <br /> must wear appropriate PPE when handling chemotherapy waste containers. <br /> Container types and storage requirements can be found in Appendix D. <br /> 4. Medical waste containers in the medical/biohazardous waste storage area shall be <br /> checked for their integrity monthly. <br /> 5. RCRA waste containers will be placed in all storage areas that require RCRA waste <br /> management. The size of the RCRA container will depend on the anticipated amount <br /> of waste. They must be spill-proof, leak-proof, and properly labeled for the waste <br /> stream.
