TGI — Indoor Air, Ambient Air, Sub-Slab Vapor, and Soil Vapor 04ARCADIS
Sampling for Analysis via USEPA Compendium Method TO-10A
Rev: 0 1 Rev Date: March 10, 2023
Soil Vapor Collection of the Sample
Sub-slab and soil vapor sample assemblies are nearly
identical. Soil vapor probes typically are equipped with COMPRESSION NUT
7W0-WAY
permanent sample assemblies. The sub-slab vapor VALVE AND FERRULE SET
point/Vapor Pin TM and connected silicone tubing 7TELBONN-LINED
shown in the Purge Configuration show to the right are
TEDLAR
not present in soil vapor probe assemblies. THREE-WAY VALVE BAG
WITH 1/4''ID A
SILICONE TUBING
1. Pre-assemble the sample train for each sub-slab CONNECTIONS
point to be sampled (Vapor Pin°with barb fitting).
PURGE SYRINGE
Cut an approximate 18-inch length and a 1-inch 1/4''11)SILICONE 1
length of Teflon or Teflon-lined 1/4-inch OD tubing. TUBING
Cut a 2-inch piece of 1/4-inch silicone tubing.
Connect the silicone tubing to one end of the 18- SUB-SLAB POINT PURGE
W BS LAB VAPOR
inch length of tubing. Connect a stainless-steel INT/VAPORPIN" CONFIGURATION WITH
SEPARATE SAMPLE
two-way valve with compression fittings to the
other side of the Teflon tubing. Connect the 1-inch piece of Teflon tubing to the other side of the
two-way valve. Connect a compression nut and ferrule set to the other end of the 1-inch piece of
Teflon tubing for the connection to the sub-slab PUF absorbent tube fitting detailed in step 4.
Connect the silicone tubing to the sub-slab point.
For both sub-slab vapor and soil vapor sampling:
2. Connect 1-inch pieces of silicone tubing to each side of the three-way valve. Connect the 60-mL
syringe to one side of the three-way valve, a TedlarO bag to another side of the three-way valve,
and the sub-slab point assembly to the last side of the three-way valve; shown in the Purge
Configuration diagram above.
3. Open the two-way valve and purge three volumes of air from the sample assembly at a rate of
<200 milliliters per minute (mL/min) into the Tedlar° bag. Approximately 10-mL of air is in 1 foot of
1/4-inch OD tubing. Discharge purged air into the Tedlar°bag.
4. After purging, close the two-way valve and remove
COMPRESSION
the purge assembly. Connect the PUF sorbent tube TW°-WAY NUT WITH
with sub-slab fitting (and quartz filter assembly if VALVE FERRULESET
TELFON OR TEFLON-
using)to the sub-slab point sample assembly LINED14"CDTUN-
LINED 1J4"CD TUBING
PUF ABSORBENT TUBE
compression fitting. Connect the tapered end of theP° I SUB-SLAB ADAPTER
PUF sorbent tube to the calibrated low flow air ABSORBENT
TUBE
pump using a short length of silicone tubing as
LOW AIR
shown in the Sample Configuration diagram to the
1/4"ID swcoNE
right. TUBING
3. Turn on the low flow air sampler. Record the start
time on the sample form. Ensure the low flow
sua-sloe TO-10A SUB-SLAB VAPOR
VAPOR POINT/ SAMPLE CONFIGURATION
sampler is reading correctly according to the VAPOR PIN
WITH SEPARATE PURGE
flow rate pre-determined by the laboratory and
project team.
Printed copies of this Technical Guidance Instruction are uncontrolled.
