Slings for handling the pipeline shall <br />not be positioned at butt-fused joints. Sections of the pipes with cuts and gouges <br />exceeding 10 percent of the pipe wall thickness or kinked sections shall be <br />removed and the ends of the pipeline rejoined. <br /> <br />3.5 JOINING PIPE SECTIONS <br /> <br /> A. HDPE pipes shall be joined to one another, to the polyethylene fittings, and to the <br />flange connections by means of thermal butt-fusion. Polyethylene pipe lengths, <br />fittings, and flanged connections to be joined by thermal butt-fusion shall be of <br />the same type, grade, and class of polyethylene compound and supplied from the <br />same raw material supplier. <br /> <br /> B. Butt-Fusion Joining: Butt-fusion of HDPE pipes and fittings shall be performed <br />in accordance with the pipe manufacturer's recommendations as to equipment and <br />technique. Depending on site conditions, butt-fusion joining shall be performed <br />in or outside of the excavation at the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's option. <br /> <br /> <br />3.6 PLACEMENT IN TRENCH <br /> <br /> A. General: Care shall be exercised when lowering pipe into the trench to prevent <br />damage or twisting of the pipe. <br /> <br /> B. HDPE Pipe Base: Pipe and fittings shall be laid directly on Coarse Gravel in <br />leachate collection trench as shown on Construction Drawings. The trench <br />bottom shall be carefully shaped to conform to the shape of the pipe and fittings <br />for the bottom one-quarter of the pipe. <br /> <br /> C. Backfill material shall be as specified in Section 02300, EARTHWORK, and <br />shall be placed in accordance with that Section and as shown on the Construction <br />Drawings. <br /> <br />3.7 CONNECTION AND REMOVAL OF HDPE LEACHATE COLLECTION PIPES <br /> <br /> A. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall develop a leachate management plan <br />with the OWNER, DESIGN ENGINEER, and QA/QC CONSULTANT to <br />address the control and containment of leachate during connection and removal of <br />LCRS pipes and trenches. <br /> <br /> B. Connect existing and new perforated HDPE pipes using appropriate coupler. <br />Extend filter geotextile and coarse gravel as necessary to connect LCRS trenches. <br /> Overlap filter geotextile a minimum 3-feet. <br /> <br /> <br />3.8 PROTECTION OF PIPE <br /> <br /> A.
