Forward Landfill WMU FU-23 ATTACHMENT A 1 LEAK LOCATION TESTING
ATTACHMENT A LEAK LOCATION TESTING PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 WORK INCLUDED A. This section includes required methods for leak location testing on an HDPE Geomembrane. Tests shall be performed on both the geomembrane in an uncovered state and on the geomembrane once the overlying granular drainage material and protective operations layers are placed. 1.2 REFERENCES
A. ASTM D6747 – Standard Guide for Selection of Techniques for Electrical
Detection of Potential Leak Paths in Geomembranes
B. ASTM D7002 – Standard Practice for Leak Location on Exposed
Geomembranes Using the Water Puddle System
1.3 QUALIFICATIONS A. Leak Location Contractors shall demonstrate successful experience in performing large-scale leak location surveys for geomembranes alone and geomembranes covered with soil. The Leak Location Contractor shall have performed at least 10,000,000 square feet of surveys in the previous three years. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Submit qualifications of proposed Leak Location Contractor to QA/QC CONSULTANT and OWNER. PART 2 DEMONSTRATION 2.1 GENERAL A. The preparations, operation of the system, and survey parameters shall be verified by performing tests over two artificial leaks. An artificial leak is an electrical simulation of a leak consisting of an area of metal the size of the desired leak connected to an insulated wire. The other end of the wire is connected to a ground electrode. The test parameters and procedures shall be: 1. An artificial leak with a diameter of 0.64 cm (0.25-inch) shall be placed at ground surface and an artificial leak with a diameter of 1.27 cm (0.5-inch) shall be buried at a depth of two-feet below ground surface. 2. A line of data shall be taken and recorded directly over the artificial leak for a distance of at least 20-feet in front and behind the artificial leak with the artificial leak disconnected to measure and quantify the background noise level (BN). The background noise level shall be defined as the difference between the maximum and minimum measured voltage with the artificial leak disconnected. 3. The artificial leak shall be connected and leak location measurements shall be made and recorded along closely-spaced parallel lines in the vicinity of
