8 CCR 5194(c)
Hazard Communication
A hazardous chemical is any
chemical that is classified as a
physical or health hazard, simple
asphyxiant, combustible dust,
pyrophoric gas, or hazard not
otherwise classified or is
included in the List of Hazardous
Substances prepared by the
Director pursuant to Labor Code
Section 6382.
Cal/OSHA defines a hazardous chemical as any chemical that is classified as a physical or
health hazard, simple asphyxiant, combustible dust, pyrophoric gas, or hazard not
otherwise classified or is included in the List of Hazardous Substances prepared by the
Director pursuant to Labor Code Section 6382.
A physical hazard is a chemical that poses one of the following hazardous effects: explosive,
flammable or combustible, oxidizer, self‐reactive, pyrophoric, organic peroxide, corrosive to
metal, gas under pressure, or water‐reactive. A health hazard is a chemical that is an acute
or chronic toxicity or causes skin corrosion or irritation, serious eye damage or eye
irritation, or respiratory sensitization.
Hazardous chemicals will be labeled with a red diamond that contains a pictogram. The
pictogram will identify what type of physical or health hazard is presented by the hazardous
chemical. In this section we will identify the physical and health hazards associated with
the nine different pictograms required by Cal/OSHA.
6
