Areas where there is a potential for a
hazardous materials spill have been equipped with spill kits.
If you discover a minor spill, the first thing that must be done is to identify the spilled
material. You will want to determine if the material is flammable, poisonous, corrosive, or
an oxidizer. Next, isolate the source of the spill in order to reduce the amount of spilled
material. After the material has been identified and the source of the spill has been
isolated, you must make notification to either your campus’s Assistant Principal or your
supervisor. When making the notification, be sure to let the Assistant Principal or your
Supervisor know what material was spilled and how much of the material was spilled. You
will also need to include in your notification whether anyone was injured as a result of the
spill and what measures have been implemented to isolate the spill.
The next step will be to secure the area so students, other employees, or anyone from the
public is not exposed to the spilled material. The final step will be to use the spill kit to
clean up the spill. All contaminated materials from cleaning up the spill must be managed
as a hazardous waste; we will cover hazardous waste management procedures in section
three.
If the spill is not a minor spill, you will still be expected to identify and isolate the source,
notify the Assistant Principal of your campus or your supervisor, and secure the area.
