The existence of overhead utilities on-site shall be discussed and <br />the MADs identified prior to commencing work related activities at the project site. <br />3.5.7 Sharp Objects <br />Sharp objects such as a utility knives require proper use and care when handling. Misuse <br />can result in serious bodily injury in the form of a deep, possibly life-threatening laceration. <br />Utility knifes may be used to cut strapping, open packaging or cut an acetate sleeve to name <br />a few common uses. Injuries sustained during utility knife use occur for the following <br />reasons: <br />• Drawing the knife towards you instead of away from your body. <br />• Working with a dull blade. <br />• Trying to cut more than the knife can handle. <br />• Improperly storing the knife with the blade extended. <br />• Failing to wear personal protective equipment. <br />• Neglecting to inspect the tool before use. <br />The following safety precautions shall be observed when using utility knives: <br />• Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and cut resistant gloves to protect your hands. <br />• Always use a sharp blade, which is safer than a dull blade. <br />• Hand a utility knife to a co-worker with the handle first. <br />• If the application allows, use a new knife with a shielded knife surface. <br />• Consider using a rounded tip blade if the application allows for such. <br />• Ensure the blades are properly positioned in the handle before use. <br />• Keep extremities out of the cutting path. <br />• Avoid applying too much pressure on the blade. <br />• Follow manufacturer's instructions when changing blades. <br />• Don't use utility knives to pry loose objects. <br />• Dispose of dull or broken blades in a puncture-resistant container. <br />3.5.8 Hand and Power Tools <br />All tools issued shall be stored and maintained in a safe, operable condition with all <br />pertinent safety equipment in place. Site personnel shall be responsible for the inspection of <br />tools issued for his/her use. Hand tools typically include ratchet set, pry bar, shovel, trowel, <br />tape measure, and utility knife. All hand and power tools must be maintained in safe <br />working condition. Defective tools must be identified, tagged and removed from the site or <br />work area. Tools that are designed to have guards must have those guards in place at all <br />times. All tools shall be kept in a neat and orderly fashion. When not in use, tools shall be <br />returned to tool rooms or stored in suitable boxes or containers or hung on racks. Cutting <br />edges shall be protected and tools should not be placed where they will roll off benches or <br />tables or move dangerously within the interior of a vehicle. Storage areas should be
