Site Health and Safety Plan Page 19 <br />• Identify ways to reduce the amount of pressure placed on your back when you do so. <br />Reduce the amount of weight lifted and consider taking several trips to reduce a <br />single heavy load. Get assistance to lift heavy or awkwardly shaped objects. <br />• Bend at the knees, keeping the back straight. <br />• Instead of using your back like a crane, allow your legs to do the work. <br />• Take a balanced stance with your feet about a shoulder-width apart with one foot <br />behind the object and the other next to it. <br />• Squat down to lift the object but keep your heels off the floor. Get as close to the <br />object as you can and keep your back straight. <br />• Use your palms and not just your fingers to get a secure grip on the object. Make sure <br />you're able to maintain a hold on the object without having to subsequently switch <br />your grip. <br />• Keep a clear view and never carry a load in from of your face as it forces you to lean <br />or twist and upsets your balance. <br />Push a dolly or cart in a linear motion. Never pull as it forces you to twist at the waist. <br />
