Site Health and Safety Plan Page 34
9. Decontamination
This section describes procedures for decontaminating site workers and equipment in
compliance with 29 CFR 1926.65(b)(4)(ii)(G). This section also describes disposal of waste
from decontamination processes. Site decontamination procedures are designed to achieve
a safe, logical removal or neutralization of contaminants that may accumulate on-site
workers and/or equipment. The site SSHO is responsible for decontamination procedures at
the site.
Decontamination procedures are intended to minimize site worker and other personnel
contact with contaminants, protect against transfer of contamination to clean areas of the
site, and areas off site. This may also extend to useful life of PPE by reducing the amount of
time that contaminants contact and/or affect the surfaces of PPE. Decontamination
procedures shall be communicated to site workers and implemented before any site worker
or equipment is permitted to enter areas where potential for exposure to hazardous
substances exists.
Emergency decontamination procedures are detailed in Section 10 of this HASP.
The decontamination procedures described below are designed to meet the requirements of
29 CFR 1926.65(k) and include site-specific information about:
• General and specific decontamination procedures for personnel and PPE.
• General and specific decontamination procedures for equipment.
• Location and type of Site decontamination equipment and procedures.
• Disposal of residual waste from decontamination procedures.
• Monitoring the efficacy of the site decontamination procedures.
9.1 General and Specific Decontamination Procedures for Site Workers and PPE
All site workers and PPE leaving this site shall be appropriately and adequately
decontaminated.
Specific decontamination for the site and site workers shall be conducted daily.
9.2 General and Specific Decontamination Procedure for Equipment
All contaminated clothing and equipment leaving the site shall be appropriately disposed of
or decontaminated.
General decontamination guidelines for equipment include:
• Particular attention given to decontaminating tires, scoops, and other parts of heavy
equipment that are directly exposed to waste and contaminated soil.
• When work is completed or heavy equipment is scheduled to leave the site, site
personnel shall brushoff all soil from the heavy equipment.
• Removed soil shall be maintained accordingly.
• Vehicles and equipment are prohibited from departing the site with visible soil on the
outside of vehicle.
