Soil Sampling Field Standard Operating Procedure <br /> SWE-FSOP-405;Revision 1 Ahtna Southwest Environmental Operations <br /> 3.1 Manual (Hand) Sampling <br /> • Trowel, shovel, pickax, mattock, or other excavating tools <br /> • Hand auger with extension rods, as necessary <br /> • Toolkit <br /> 3.2 Split Spoon or Shelby Tube Sampling <br /> • Drill rig equipped with hollow stem augers and a drop hammer <br /> • Split spoon or Shelby tube samplers (at least two) <br /> • Split spoon liners, as necessary <br /> • Sampling tube basket or spring retainers for loose soil <br /> • Toolkit <br /> 3.3 Continuous Sampling <br /> • Drill rig equipped with direct-push capabilities and pushrods or core barrel assembly that <br /> advances in front of the auger cutting head <br /> • Enough drill rod liners for the planned number of sampling intervals <br /> • Hook-blade utility knife to cut the liners (drillers may have a cutter on the rig) <br /> • Basket retainers and caps for the liner ends for loose soil <br /> • Toolkit <br /> • Boring log forms <br /> 4.0 Procedures <br /> Procedures are provided for: <br /> • Pre-Field Tasks (Section 4.1) <br /> • Retrieval Techniques (Section 4.2) <br /> • Sample Collection (Section 4.3) <br /> 4.1 Pre-Field Tasks <br /> Before sample collection, follow these general steps: <br /> • Inspect the area to confirm work can be performed safely and there are no potential sources of <br /> field contamination (e.g., debris, wind-blown dust, etc.) <br /> • Decontaminate all non-disposal sampling equipment according to SWE-FSOP-801 (Equipment <br /> Decontamination). <br /> [PFAS Project]: Dedicated or disposable equipment should be rinsed with certified PFAS-free <br /> water. If another source of water is used, collect a water sample and run laboratory tests for <br /> PFAS before using that source. <br /> • Confirm that any disposable sampling equipment is clean and stored correctly before use. <br /> • Don the appropriate PPE, as specified in the SSHP. <br /> • Determine the sample collection locations based on the project goals and work plan <br /> specifications. <br /> Page 8 of 15 <br />
