Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan
The Home Depot Store #5857
4 Waste Storage Areas
4.1 Hazardous Wastes Generated at I
The types of hazardous wastes generated at the Site will vary depending on the consumer product and typically
include:
• Fertilizers with pesticides;
• Flammable liquids;
• Toxic solids;
• Toxic liquids;
• Aerosols, and,
• Alkaline/corrosive liquids.
Wastes are typically generated from damaged or spilled consumer products. Some paint waste is generated from
maintenance activities.
The Site has no hazardous waste satellite accumulation areas. Wastes (including hazardous and non -hazardous
streams) are stored in the HHMA CSA located indoors on the west side of the Site building (Figure 2).
The HHMA CSA is a labeled and designated concrete -floored space approximately 12 feet wide by 24 feet long.
It is comprised of 8 lanes. Each lane is approximately 3 feet wide by 12 feet long, divided by floor markings or
temporary chains. Each section stores a particular waste stream, such as aerosols, flammables, acids, etc. See
Appendix B for the HHMA CSA layout and typical wastes stored in each lane. There are no floor drains located in
the area. Wastes are typically stored in 55 -gallon drums. The total quantity of waste stored in each row/lane
varies based on generation rate.
An eye wash station, spill kit and fire extinguisher are located near the HHMA CSA (see Figure 2). Emergency
contact information is posted near the HHMA CSA. Personnel in the area use two-way radios or cell phones for
communication. Emergency response equipment information is provided in Section 7.
The HHMA CSA is the 90 -day storage area that is inspected weekly by the Emergency Coordinator, or designee,
and recorded on a Weekly Inspection Form located in Appendix A. During the weekly inspection, the Emergency
Coordinator, or designee, checks for spills and leaks, proper signs, adequate aisle spacing, labeling, condition of
containers, segregation of incompatibles, proper storage of ignitables, and condition of emergency equipment for
the area. Completed inspection forms are maintained electronically for a minimum of 3 years.
10
