28 December 2020 AdvancedGeo
Project No. 17-4073 An Employee-Owned Company
Page 3 of 5
3.1. BORING ACTIVITIES
The following procedures will be performed prior to any boring activities:
Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan in accordance with the Occupational Safety and
Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities - Prepared by National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
October 1985.
• Notify the RWQCB and SJCEHD a minimum of 72 hours prior to commencement
of any work, following the date of issue for drilling and/or well permits.
• All drilling locations will be marked at least 48 hours in advance for an Underground
Service Alert (USA) check of underground utilities or pipes.
3.1.1. Boring Advancement and Sampling
One soil boring will be completed near the location of the former 350-gallon UST of
unknown contents, as requested by the RWQCB, while the four additional borings will be
completed at various locations within the site (Figure 2). Soil samples will be collected at
5 feet bsg from the borings utilizing a 4-inch diameter hand auger. Soil samples collected
from the hand auger bucket will be placed directly into 6-inch acetate sample sleeves.
The exposed ends of each sample sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and
sealed with tape.
The 10 foot samples from each boring will be collected utilizing a truck mounted Geoprobe
5400 direct-push probing unit (or equivalent) equipped with 1.25-inch sampling assembly
loaded with a two-foot acetate liner. Upon sample retrieval, a selected portion of the liner
will be cut and covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
All soil samples will be visually logged and classified by an AGI geologist in accordance
with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Additionally, the soil samples will be
field screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic vapor
meter (OVM), equipped with a photo-ionization detector (PID). Soil sample descriptions
and OVM readings will be recorded on a log for each soil boring.
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve will be labeled with the boring
location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled
samples will be placed in a chilled container and transported under chain of custody to a
State of California ELAP-certified laboratory. Soil samples will be analyzed for the
following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as Stoddard solvent (TPH-ss).
