1.2.2 Sample Containers and Preservatives
The laboratory will provide sample containers prior to sampling events. The containers
will be pre-cleaned to meet USEPA standards and will not be rinsed in the field prior to
sample collection.
1.3 Pre-Sampling Procedures
Several steps will be conducted before samples are collected from the wells. These steps
will ensure that instruments are functioning and properly calibrated, and that the
necessary equipment has been supplied for efficient and accurate sampling.
1.3.1 Inventory
The sampler will verify that the correct equipment is ready to be shipped to the field site,
and that it is clean(decontaminated).The sampler will verify that the appropriate personal
protective equipment and ancillary supplies (e.g., paper towels, decontamination
solution) are ready to be shipped to the field site. The appropriate protective equipment
will be reviewed during a morning tailgate meeting. The field supervisor or project
manager will be contacted if there are discrepancies.
1.3.2 Calibration
The field probes will be calibrated consistent with the manufacturer's specifications and
the following requirements before sampling and at the start of each field day:
1. The pH probe will be calibrated using three points (pH = 4, 7, 10) using fresh
calibration solutions;
2. The DO meter will be calibrated to moist air(100% saturation) and;
3. The ORP meter will be calibrated using calibration solutions; and
4. Specific conductance will be calibrated using calibration solutions.
The sampler will record the calibration data on the field calibration record provided in
this SOP or a similar field form. Instruments will be recalibrated as necessary(e.g.,when
calibration checks indicate incorrect operation)to ensure accurate measurements, and all
checks and recalibrations will be recorded on field calibration forms. If readings are
suspect the calibration will be checked.
