MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
1
CSBP Ferrous Sulfate
ABN: 81 008 668 371
Advice to Doctor Treat symptomatically and supportively. In the body, the ferrous ion [Fe21] is
believed to be oxidised to ferric ion[Fe 31,which may lead to metabolic acidosis.
Ingestion of large amounts of iron salts may result in haematemesis. In patients not
in shock or coma, induce emesis with syrup of ipecac, if vomiting has not
occurred.Follow with gastric lavage using deferoxamine,2 gram in 1 litre, which
contains sodium bicarbonate 20 g/L.Leave 10 grams of deferoxamine in 50 mL of
5% sodium bicarbonate in the stomach. Maintain airway, blood pressure and
respiration.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Exposure Standards: I mg/m3(Time Weighted Average)iron salts,soluble(as iron,Fe).
Engineering Controls: Use in well ventilated areas.Avoid high dust concentration.
Personal Protection
Respirator Type(AS 1716): Where dust is a problem,use P2 type canister respirator.
Glove Type: Wear PVC gloves to prevent contact.
Eye Protection: Wear dust-proof goggles to prevent eye contact.
Clothing: Wear long sleeves and long trousers to prevent contact.
Personal Hygiene: Change and wash clothing, and personal protection equipment if contaminated,or
before storing and/or re-using.Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and
before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.
Flammability
Fire Hazards: Ferrous sulfate is non flammable and does not support combustion.
SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
Storage and Transport
Location: Store in a cool, clean, dry and ventilated area. Avoid contact with moisture,as it
will cause product-handling problems.
Storage Incompatibilities: Store away from alkaline materials and oxidizing agents.
Dangerous Goods Class: No Dangerous Goods Class allocated.
Subsidiary Risk: No Subsidiary Risk allocated.
Special Transport Requirements: Keep away from alkaline materials and oxidizing agents.
Spills and Disposal
Minimising Spill/Leaks: Any spillage should be cleaned up promptly and swept up. Prevent run-off into
drains and waterways.
Clean Up Spills/Leaks: Contain spills with moistened sand or chemical absorbant material. Collect and
reuse where possible.
Precautions for Clean Up Crew: Clean up personnel should vacuum, or wet sweep, to avoid dust dispersal. Wear
dust-proof goggles and PVC/rubber gloves. Avoid generating dust and if
inhalation risk exists wear P2 type canister respirator.
Special Equipment for Clean up: A front end loader may be required to scoop up spilt ferrous sulfate, and sealable
containers to package for disposal.
Disposal Method: Collect all spills and return to manufacturer for disposal in accordance with
Department of Environmental Protection requirements.
IF0855 Version No.4.0 Page 3 of 4
Document last modified:28 July 2003.
