MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
'CSBP Ferrous Sulfate
ABN: 81 008 668 371
Ingredients
Chemical Name CAS Number Proportion
Either
Ferrous sulfate monohydrate 13463-43-9 100%,when bagged
[FeSO4.H201
Or
Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate 7782-63-0 100%, when bagged
[FeSO4.7H20]
HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Health Effects
Acute: Ferrous sulfate is an irritant with moderate toxicity. Fatal poisoning in adults is
rare. Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, or impaired liver,
kidney or repiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of ferrous
sulfate. Symptoms of iron poisoning may occur within 30 minutes, or be delayed
for several hours.
Swallowed: Moderate toxicity. Ingestion of large quantities may cause vomiting, acidocis,
bloody diarrhoea, black stool and shock. Pink urine discoloration is a strong
indicator of iron poisoning. Circulatory system may be affected with symptoms of
shock, rapid, weak or no pulse, severe hypotension and pulmonary changes with
dyspnea, and emphysaema. In some cases, necrosis and haemorrhage of the
gastrointestinal tract, liver damage and death may occur. Scarring of the
gastrointestinal tract may occur in non-fatal cases. The average lethal dose of iron
is about 200 to 250 mg per kg of body weight. Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate LD50
(Oral mouse)= 1520 mg/kg.
Eye: Irritant. Contact may result in lacrimation, irritation, pain, redness and
conjunctivitis.Prolonged contact—comeal burns and possible permanent damage.
Skin: Irritant.Prolonged contact may result in irritation, itching and possible skin rash.
Inhaled: Low irritant. Over exposure at high levels may result in mucous membrane
irritation of the nose and throat with coughing and shortness of breath.
Chronic: Severe or chronic ferrous sulfate poisonings may damage blood vessels and cause
liver effects. In infants chronic exposure may cause rickets. Repeated eye contact
may result in conjunctivitis and eye discoloration.
First Aid
Swallowed: If more than a small quantity has been swallowed and if person is conscious, rinse
mouth thoroughly with water immediately and give water or milk to drink. Induce
vomiting.Seek medical help, when relevant symptoms occur after swallowing.
Eye: Immediately irrigate with copious amounts of water, while holding eyelids open ,
for at least 15 minutes.Seek medical assistance if irritation persists.
Skin: Wash affected area with copious amounts of water.Remove contaminated clothing
and launder before re-use.
Inhaled: Remove affected person from exposure to a well ventilated area.Keep warm and at
rest. In emergency situations, if breathing is difficult give oxygen. If the effected
person suffers cardiac arrest commence cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
immediately.Seek urgent medical attention.
First Aid Facilities: Whenever ferrous sulfate is in regular use ensure drinking water, safety
shower/eyewash station and eye-wash bottle are available.
IF0855 Version No.4.0 Page 2 of 4
Document last modified:28 July 2003.
