Additional samples may be
required by the SJCEHD to adequately characterize the excavation.
All soil samples shall be collected at a minimum of 2 vertical feet into native material.
If areas of obvious contamination are observed, they are also to be sampled.
Samples must be discrete and cannot be combined into a composite sample for analysis in the field
or the lab. Each sample must have a set of corresponding analytical results.
TANK – IF WATER IS NOT PRESENT IN THE TANK PIT
Tank Size Minimum # of
Soil Samples Location of Soil Samples
Less than 12,000 gallons 2 per tank 1 from below the tank invert, directly below each
opposite end of the tank
Equal to or more than
12,000 gallons 3 per tank 1 from below the center of the tank and 1 from below
each end of the tank, below the tank invert
TANK – IF WATER IS PRESENT IN THE TANK PIT
Tank Size Minimum # of
Soil Samples Location of Soil Samples
Less than 12,000 gallons 2 per tank* 1 from the side wall next to opposite ends of the tank,
at the soil/groundwater interface
Equal to or more than
12,000 gallons, or tank cluster 4 per tank* 1 from the side wall next to each end of the tank, at
the soil/groundwater interface
*A minimum of 1 water sample shall be taken from the tank pit. The tank pit may be purged and allowed to refill
before sampling. The water is to be representative of the water in the tank pit. If water is purged, a hazardous
waste determination must be made for all purged water in accordance with Title 22 hazardous waste regulations,
and any waste water disposed of under appropriate manifest, as required.
TANK – IF A SLAB IS PRESENT IN THE TANK PIT
All samples shall be obtained beneath the slab within native soils. Penetration through the slab will be
required in order to collect the samples. Additional soil samples may be required.
PIPING, DISPENSERS & STOCKPILES
Connected piping 1 sample for every 20 linear feet and below each pipe fitting
Dispensers 1 sample below each removed dispenser
Soil Stockpile 1 sample per 100 cubic yards of soil, taken between 2-4 feet below the
surface of the stockpile
References: California LUFT Manual: September 2012 (rev.
