Revised: 01/31/2023 3
Job Steps Hazards Actions to Eliminate or Minimize Hazards RAC
4. Perform Saw Cutting of
Concrete/Asphalt
- Property damage to subsurface
structures
- Excessive Noise
- Bodily injury from flying debris
- Exposure to Silica dust
- Electric shock
- Losing control of saw
- Objects in path
- Vibration
- Exhaust inhalation hazard
- Run-off of water residue
- Explosion Hazard
- Silica Run-Off (Contamination)
- Alkali Burns to eyes or skin
- Bodily Injury/struck- by or property
damage
- Falling Tools or Equipment
- Slips/Trips/Falls
1. Mark site for USA/Coordinate Dig Alert, Conduct Geo physical
survey, review maps and/or "as-builts" prior to saw cutting. Stop
work and reevaluate if something is not understood or there's a
change in conditions. Do not over-cut concrete/asphalt.
2. Always don proper hearing protection when operating saw. All
employees will wear hearing protection when its over 85 dBA. If
sound levels reach 95 dBA, employees must double up on hearing
protection by wearing ear muffs.
3. Stay out of the line-of-fire and do not allow unnecessary
personnel within the exclusion zone. Always don a face shield in
addition to safety glass to protect eyes and face. Do not operate saw
without a proper blade guard, keep blade guard down, do not
overcut, (blade can break into pieces and go airborne).
4. Use saw with OEM integrated water supply for dust suppression,
dry cutting is not permitted. Use engineering and work practice
control methods for the equipment and task that follow 1926.1153,
Table 1:
Use of integrated water delivery system that continuously feeds
water to the blade.
Operate and maintain tool in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions to minimize dust emissions. If wet methods can not be
used, employees must wear half-masked with P-100 filters.
5. Electric saws should be approved, double-insulated. If not, it
should be properly grounded and plugged into a GFCI-protected
outlet. Cords should not be in water.
6. Keep a firm grip on saw at all times. STOP work immediately if
saw is questionable.
7. Keep hoses, cords and other items routed out of path.
8. Avoid long-term, repetitive cutting. Cutting while tired will cause
you to stand closer to the saw and increase your risk of being
struck.
9. Never operate gas powered saw in a confined space. Use
ventilation fans at source of emissions to provide fresh air and
mitigate build fumes in or near the breathing zones.
10. Vacuum all water and store in proper drum(s) to prevent run-
off. Protect liquid from entering storm drain catch basins or sewers.
11. Only refuel machine when saw is shut-off and cooled down.
12. Vacuum slurry from saw cuts.
13. Use adequate water while cutting and always wear the PPE
required for the task. Keep skin, eyes and face protected from
concrete slurry created during cutting.
M
NC-25-1137 Tiwana & Sons
1210 East Hammer Lane, Stockton, CA 95210
