Attachment A: Notes from Training Sessions with Freon Free <br />Sims Metal: Appliance Recycling <br />IF Materials Requiring Special Handling are in appliances: <br />Tools necessary (among others) <br />Sockets: 1/4, 5/16 <br />Electric drill <br />Bolt cutters <br />Chisel <br />Hammer <br />Storage: Waste oil is commingled with site used oil in the Oil Storage shed up to 90 days. <br />Other MRSH are handled as Universal Waste and shipped within one year of first <br />accumulation. <br />Notes on Washing Machines — It can take 10 minutes to service <br />Be careful with capacitors —there maybe stored energy. You can discharge the stored <br />energy with a screwdriver. <br />The new electric washers are difficult to access capacitors. <br />Use bolt cutters to snip off the top of the posts that hold the springs intact. Then you push <br />the washer drum out towards the bottom to access the transmission and remove the <br />capacitor. <br />GE Washers have between 2 cups and 2 quarts of oil. The waste oil goes into the Site <br />Waste/Used Oil storage drum that is disposed of quarterly. <br />Mercury switches are found in washers from the SOs and 60s, specifically Whirlpool and <br />Lady Kenmore. Mercury switches are removed and stored5allon plastic container. <br />Use of mercury switches was stopped in the 197 <br />0s. Look for the brown, avocado, gold, <br />and white colored washers. <br />Mercury switches were replaced with electric switches. Look for a plastic clip or in <br />and <br />contact on the lid. If plastic, there are NO mercury switches on the machine. <br />If there is no contact switch at the lid of the washer, look for a mercury switch. <br />In a Direct Driver Washing Machine without a belt: the black capacitor was used for a <br />power boost. These may have PCBs but no mercury switches. They should be accessible <br />in 5 minutes. <br />To remove gear oil from washers: look to see how large the transmission is. The larger <br />casing will store more oil. Be sure to have the appropriate drain pans to handle the <br />expected volume of drained oil. <br />Place a grate over the dri <br />p pan so the washer does not get oily. You may use an oven <br />rack. <br />
