Hazardous Material Safety Procedure <br />PURPOSE <br />To provide employees with clear safety procedures for recognizing and responding to a hazardous material release or <br />threatened release, in accordance with OSHA and emergency preparedness requirements. <br />WHAT IS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL? <br />A hazardous material is any substance that can pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment (e.g., <br />chemicals, flammable liquids, compressed gases, corrosives). <br />RECOGNIZE A RELEASE OR THREATENED RELEASE <br />• Spills, leaks, or damaged containers <br />• Unusual odors, vapors, or visible clouds <br />• Alarms, hissing sounds, or pressure release <br />• Conditions that could reasonably result in a release <br />IMMEDIATE ACTIONS — DO NOT DELAY <br />1. STOP WORK and move away from the area if safe to do so <br />2. DO NOT touch, clean up, or attempt to control the material <br />3. WARN OTHERS in the immediate area <br />4. REPORT the incident to a supervisor and call 911 if required <br />EVACUATION & SAFETY <br />• Follow posted evacuation/escape routes <br />• Proceed to designated assembly areas <br />• Do not re-enter the area until authorized <br />• Assist visitors or coworkers if it can be done safely <br />PERSONAL PROTECTION <br />• Use only PPE you are trained and authorized to use <br />• Never assume PPE makes a spill safe to handle <br />• Avoid breathing vapors or contacting materials <br />IMPORTANT REMINDERS <br />• Only trained and authorized personnel may respond to hazardous material incidents <br />• When in doubt, evacuate and report <br />• Safety comes before property or product <br />QUESTIONS? <br />Contact your supervisor or Environmental Health & Safety representative. <br />
