4.6.3 Sample Identification
Each sample will be labelled with a unique sample number(based on sample location, media, and/or depth)
that will facilitate tracking and cross-referencing of sample information. Equipment rinsate blank, field
duplicate samples, and laboratory quality control samples will also be numbered with a unique sample
number to prevent analytical bias of field QC samples.
Examples of the sample numbering system for each type of media to be sampled are presented below:
• Grab Groundwater Sample Example: MW-01
• Soil Vapor Sample Example: SG-01
A chain-of-custody record will be completed during sample collection and will accompany the samples to the
laboratory. The field personnel collecting the samples will be responsible for the custody of the samples until
the samples are relinquished to the laboratory. In accordance with typical chain of custody protocols, sample
transfer will require the individuals relinquishing and receiving the samples to sign, date and note the time of
sample transfer on the chain-of-custody record.
3989.00015101/R Revised Data Gap Investigation Work Plan I ROUX 112
