A=COM <br /> • If shade is not available, shaded areas shall be constructed.This same type of canopy can be <br /> set up to shade personnel performing various types of work in hot weather. <br /> • Cooling measures other than shade(e.g., misting, air-conditioned break areas, air conditioned <br /> vehicles, etc.)can be used in lieu of shade provided it can be demonstrated that they are at <br /> least as effective in cooling employees. <br /> • Employees should have access to these rest areas at break times and at any other time when <br /> suffering from heat illness or believing a preventive recovery period is needed. <br /> 4.7.5 Dry clothing or towels should be available to minimize chills when taking breaks. <br /> 4.7.6 Manual labor will not be performed during breaks, other than paperwork or similar light tasks. <br /> 4.7.7 Other controls that may be used include: <br /> • Scheduling work at night or during the cooler parts of the day(6 am-10 am, 3 pm-7 pm). <br /> • Erecting a cover or partition to shade the work area. <br /> • Auxiliary cooling-wearing cooling devices beneath protective garments, but over any <br /> underclothing. <br /> o If cooling devices are worn, only physiological monitoring will be used to determine work <br /> activity. <br /> o These vests typically provide cooling via one of two methods: the use of ice or other <br /> frozen media, or the use of a vortex cooler. Each method has its advantages and <br /> disadvantages. <br /> o The frozen media vest requires a means for freezing the media, and the media (usually <br /> water or"blue ice")will melt, requiring replacement. <br /> o The vortex cooler tends to cool more uniformly. Instead of frozen media, this vest uses the <br /> expansion of compressed air to cool the wearer. The drawback is the compressed air <br /> requirement, but this is negated when the wearer is already using an airline respirator <br /> supplied by a compressor. A vortex cooler should not be supplied from air cylinders, as <br /> this will draw down the cylinders rapidly. <br /> • Auxiliary cooling should be considered when the following conditions exist: <br /> o Ambient temperature over 80°F(26°C). <br /> o Workers are wearing impermeable garments(i.e., Tyvek, Saranex, Chemrel, etc.). <br /> o It is desirable to have long work shifts with minimum interruption. <br /> 4.8 Evaluating the Work-Rest Schedule's Effectiveness <br /> 4.8.1 Once a work-rest schedule is established, the Supervisor shall continually evaluate its <br /> effectiveness through observation of Employees for signs/symptoms of heat stress. Have workers <br /> assess themselves and their body's reaction to the heat and work conditions(self-assessment), <br /> and report any signs or symptoms of heat illness. These can include nausea or dizziness, heat <br /> cramps, extreme thirst, or very dark urine. <br /> 4.8.2 Measurement or physiological monitoring of each Employee's vitals(e.g., pulse, blood pressure, <br /> and temperature)can provide additional information in determining if the schedule is adequate. <br /> Refer to S3AM-113-ATT1 Heat Stress— Temperature Thresholds for additional guidance on when <br /> physiological monitoring should be conducted. <br /> 4.8.3 Frequency of physiological monitoring is increased or decreased depending upon such factors as <br /> worker fitness, acclimatization,temperature of the work environment, type of PPE, etc. <br /> Based on the results of the physiological monitoring and on the workers' self-assessments, the <br /> work period may be adjusted as follows: <br /> Heat Stress(S3AM-113-PR1) <br /> Revision 3 September 30,2020 <br /> PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED.CONTROLLED COPY IS AVAILABLE ON COMPANY INTRANET. 8 of 10 <br />
