Interim Guidance for Coronaviruses - April 23, 2021 AOcom
This internal global guidance document is produced by SH&E and Global Security&Resilience and is intended to convey
current information available regarding the Coronavirus pandemic from the World Health Organization(WHO),the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control(CDC)and Prevention and other government agencies. This document is not intended to
provide medical advice and should not be interpreted as such. If you experience any symptoms of the Coronavirus, please
seek medical attention immediately. To the extent any guidance in this document conflicts with applicable federal, state or
local laws or with guidance from a government agency or advice of an employee's health care professional, said advice or
guidance shall supersede the guidance provided in this document. Please contact your HR representative if you have any
questions regarding time off(sick/medical leave, etc.)related to the Coronavirus.
What are Coronaviruses?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans. The CDC advises a novel Coronavirus is a new
strain of Coronavirus, previously identified in humans, with the virus named "SARS-CoV-2"and the disease it causes has been
named "Coronavirus disease 2019" (abbreviated "Coronavirus"). For purpose of this document it will be referred to simply as
Coronavirus. Due to the alarming levels of spread and severity,on March 11th, 2020 WHO declared that Coronavirus can be
characterized as a pandemic and AECOM subsequently launched our Pandemic Procedure,a global framework that ensures a
consistent approach around managing Coronavirus in the workplace while allowing for appropriate localization in how we
respond. This document is updated as the current pandemic develops so please download latest versions via Ecosystem link.
How dangerous is it?According to WHO and CDC, illness related to Coronavirus infection is generally mild and begins
gradually. Some people become infected but feel well for a period of time before developing symptoms(pre-symptomatic),
though during this period they are contagious, increasing risk of transmission if they don't self-quarantine and/or maintain
social distancing. Most patients recover from the disease without needing special treatment, however approximately 10-15%
of cases progress to severe disease, and about 5%become critically ill (WHO—Coronavirus Update 36).Older people, and
those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems, cancer or diabetes, are more likely to
develop serious illness and there continues to be a global increase in Coronavirus related deaths, generally in patients with
existing, underlying symptoms. However,WHO advises anyone can catch Coronavirus and become seriously ill.
Signs and Symptoms
According to CDC and WHO dedicated Coronavirus resource sites, there are a wide range of signs and symptoms of infection
and may include the below, individually or in combinations, and usually display within 2-14 days after exposure, most commonly
around 5-6 days. The CDC(and other local Government Departments e.g. Ministry of Health) have developed a Coronavirus self-
checker to assess symptoms and provide general advice about seeking medical treatment.
Coronavirus Symptoms(Common) Coronavirus Symptoms(Other)
Tiredness Aches and pains
Fever
Nasal congestion
Cough (usually dry)
Runny nose
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing Sore throat
Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
New loss of taste or smell
Chills
Conjunctivitis(also known as red eye)
Headache
Rash on skin or discoloration of fingers or toes
These symptoms are non-specific and may have another cause, such as a cold or seasonal influenza virus and treatment is
generally the same unless there has been a known Coronavirus contact,or associated travel history, in which case notify your
personal physician of the possible exposure and symptoms in advance of seeking treatment. If you develop any of these
emergency warning signs for Coronavirus(not all inclusive)-fever and/or cough associated with trouble breathing, persistent
pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, bluish lips or face, you should seek urgent medical
attention.
© AECOM Restricted
