ACOM
SOP 404 - Grab Groundwater Sampling
(Procedure Not Applicable to PFAS)
1 SUMMARY:
Soil vapor wells will be installed, and grab groundwater samples will be collected when
groundwater is present. Soil vapor wells will be drilled to the targeted maximum depth;
however, should groundwater be encountered at a depth less than 16 feet below ground
surface (bgs), a grab groundwater sample will be collected. Sampling equipment may
include bailers (either metal or plastic), , PVC casings and screens, sample containers, and
decontaminations supplies (three 5-gallon buckets, Liquinox®and deionized [DI] water).
Procedure:
• The uppermost section of the shallowest water encountered will be subject to
groundwater sampling.
• Groundwater samples will be collected with a Hydropunch groundwater sampler or
disposable bailer following the installation of a temporary PVC casing.
Using direct-push technology, advance boreholes to depth. If boring extends into
groundwater, proceed to groundwater sample collection.
• Advance a small diameter hollow push rod with a closed configuration filter tip to
groundwater collection depth.
• Once at depth, retract the push rods and expose filter screen to allow groundwater to
infiltrate the inlet screen.
• Lower a disposable bailer through the push rod to the screened section and retrieve
grab groundwater sample.
• Transfer groundwater from bailer into the appropriate sampling containers supplied by
the laboratory.
o Pick-up sample bottle and remove cap.
o Fill sample container per project specified directions.
o Place cap on sample bottle and screw tight.
o Label sample bottle as directed by project instructions.
o Apply tape and a tamper proof seal to lid of container and initial the seal.
o Repeat steps c through e until all sample containers are filled.
o Place filled sample containers in appropriate size re-sealable bags.
o Place bags with filled sample containers inside cooler containing ice.
o All samples should be shipped within 24 hours to minimize delay in analysis.
