Universal Health & Safety Plan
For use on all high-risk,industrial and HAZWOPER projects
Department of Toxic Substances Control
2.7 Chemical Hazards/ Constituents of Concern
A chemical hazard is a type of occupational hazard caused by exposure to chemicals in the workplace. Exposure to chemicals
in the workplace can cause acute or long-term detrimental health effects. Potential exposure to chemical hazards on AECOM
projects can come from several sources including materials brought on site to perform work, constituents of concern found in
environmental media under investigation, and simultaneous operations being performed at the site by the property owner/third
parties.
Based on information obtained from historical investigations and other sources, the chemicals in the table below are known or
suspected to be present at the site.
Summary of Hazardous Properties of Contaminant Exposure Hazards
Notes:PEL=Permissible Exposure Limit I TLV=Threshold Limit Value I IP=Ionization Potential I eV=Electron Volt
ExposureChemical Name Media Primary Routes PEL TILV IP
of
Benzene ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 1 ppm 0.5 ppm 9.25
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Diesel fuel(TPH-DRO) ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation n/a 15 ppm n/a
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Ethylbenzene ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 5 ppm 20 ppm 8.77
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Gasoline(TPH-GRO) ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation n/a 300 ppm n/a
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
MTBE ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 40 ppm 40 ppm n/a
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Tetrachloroethylene(PCE) ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 25 ppm 25 ppm 9.32
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Trichloroethene ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 25 ppm 10 ppm 9.45
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Toluene ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 10 ppm 20 ppm 8.82
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Vinyl Chloride ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 1 ppm 1 ppm 8.82
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Xylene ❑X Soil ❑X Groundwater Inhalation 100 ppm 100 ppm 9.99
❑X Vapor ❑ n/a
Notes: 1.Exposure limits based on DDT.
2.Exposure limits based on Chlordane. No PELs are set for alpha or gamma chlordane.
2.8 Decontamination
All possible and necessary steps shall be taken to reduce or minimize contact with chemicals and contaminated/impacted
materials while performing field activities. Decontamination steps are outlined in the Hazardous Waste Operations procedure
S3AM-117-PR1.
All decontaminated equipment shall be visually inspected for contamination prior to leaving the Contaminant Reduction Zone
(CRZ).
Decontamination Procedures & Equipment
Procedure I Equipment
Equipment will be decontaminated using: an Alconox@ and water Alconox®and water solution rinse, and then triple rinsed
solution rinse, and then rinsed with distilled water. with distilled water
©AECOM Restricted
Universal Heath and Safety Plan Template(S4(DSC)AM-209-FM-C) 6
Revision 12 September 9,2021
PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED.CONTROLLED COPY IS AVAILABLE ON COMPANY INTRANET.
