M CDIM Standard Operating Procedure
2.2 Surface and Shallow Soil Sampling
N 0 1 N i 1 R I N 0 Rev.0 1/27/2022
wall along hidden fracture planes in the earth material. Such slumping or caving can be triggered
by vibrations from the excavation equipment or unforeseen conditions. For these reasons, no one
should enter an open excavation until appropriate safety precautions have been taken. An access
bench or ramp should be excavated opposite the wall to be inspected as a safety exit. If shoring
is needed, fast and convenient portable hydraulic shores are often available and would be
installed by personnel familiar with appropriate safety requirements.
If using sample sleeves, place Teflon tape over each end of the sleeve and seal each
end with plastic end caps. If using glass jars, cap or seal the jars appropriately. Custody seals
may be used for additional sample security on sleeves or jars. Appropriately label and number the
sample containers per the project work plans.
4. RECORDS
Records generated as a result of this SOP will be controlled and maintained by the PM in
the appropriate Dropbox data folder. Records will mainly consist of data documented in logbooks
or on field data sheets. At a minimum, the following data is recorded:
• Name of the sampler
• Sample ID number
• Sample location
• Sample description
• Date and time of sample collection
• Approximate quantity of sample collected
• Type of analysis to be performed
• Method of sample collection
• Sketch or diagram of sample location
5. HEALTH AND SAFETY
All work will be performed under CDIM's Corporate Health and Safety Plan. A Project
Health and Safety Plan (PHSP) will be prepared for the sampling Site prior to commencement of
field work. All project personnel and subcontractors at the Site will review the PHSP prior to
commencing work and will comply with the PHSP requirements.
6. ATTACHMENTS
None.
7.
