The potential routes of exposure during CDIM activities include
inhalation, dermal contact, and ingestion. Dermal contact is expected to be the most significant exposure route,
and engineering controls, administrative controls, and appropriate PPE will be used to help minimize exposure
through this route. The potential for exposure by inhalation is expected to be low, as soil will not be disturbed
during the proposed work. The potential for exposure by ingestion is also expected to be low. Personnel will be
required to use good personal hygiene practices and appropriate PPE to minimize the potential for incidental
ingestion of Site contaminants. To limit ingestion of hazardous chemicals, there will be no eating, drinking, or
smoking in presumed contaminated areas of the Site.
Chemical information from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pocket
Guide to Chemical Hazards(NIOSH, 2007) is available online.'
6 HAZARD CONTROLS
6.1 Health and Safety Procedures
Health and Safety Procedures are provided for the activities anticipated to be conducted during the
project. These Health and Safety Procedures outline best practices associated with project tasks and provide
controls to implement to ensure safety and health in the field. Health and Safety Procedures are included in
Appendix B of this HSP for the following activities:
• HSP-1, Health and Safety Procedure 1—Personal Protective Equipment.
• HSP-2, Health and Safety Procedure 2—Respiratory Protection.
• HSP-4, Health and Safety Procedure 4—Physical Hazards.
• HSP-6, Health and Safety Procedure 6—Infectious Disease Preparedness Response Plan.
• HSP-10, Health and Safety Procedure 10—Heat and Cold Stress
• HSP-12, Health and Safety Procedure 12—Hearing Protection
2 https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg
CDIM—Fairgrounds Industrial Park Page 10
