CON CIDIM
Corporate Safety Program
HSP-2. Respiratory Protection
°°° • °° Rev. 1 08/23/2018
o Turning head from side to side (complete movements);
o Nodding head up and down (complete movements);
o Talking—ask the subject to read aloud a short passage of text
o Normal breathing.
f. If the person being fit tested reports detecting the irritant smoke at any time, the test is failed.
The person being retested must repeat the entire sensitivity check and fit test procedure.
g. Each test subject passing the irritant smoke test without evidence of a response (involuntary
cough, irritation) shall be given a second sensitivity screening check, with the smoke from the
same smoke tube used during the fit test, once the respirator has been removed, to
determine whether he/she still reacts to the smoke. Failure to evoke a response shall void the
fit test.
h. If a response is produced during this second sensitivity check, then the fit test is passed.
6AUse of Respirators
Procedures for properly using respirators will be defined prior to the start of each work task requiring
respiratory protection using the Activity Hazard Analysis process defined in the CSP. At minimum, these
procedures will address:
• Conditions that may result in facepiece seal leakage;
• Requirements necessary to ensure effective respirator operation throughout a work shift.
Respirators with tight-fitting facepieces will not be worn by employees who have:
• Facial hair that comes between the face and the sealing surface of the facepiece or that interferes
with valve function; or
• Any condition that interferes with the face-to-facepiece seal or valve function.
• Corrective glasses or goggles or other personal protective equipment, unless such equipment
can be worn in a manner that does not interfere with the respirator seal.
6.5Monitoring of Ongoing Respirator Effectiveness
Work area conditions and the degree of employee exposure or stress shall be monitored. Whenever there
is a change in work area conditions or degree of employee exposure or stress, the employer shall
reevaluate the continued effectiveness of the respirator.
Employees must leave the respirator use area:
• To wash their faces and respirator facepieces as necessary to prevent eye or skin irritation
associated with respirator use; or
• If they detect breakthrough, changes in breathing resistance, or leakage of the facepiece; or
• To replace the respirator or the filter, cartridge, or canister elements.
If the employee detects vapor or gas breakthrough, changes in breathing resistance, or leakage of the
facepiece, the respirator must be replaced or repaired before the employee returns.
6.6CIeaning and Disinfecting
Each respirator user will be provided with a respirator that is clean, sanitary, and in good working
condition. Respirators shall be cleaned and disinfected at the following intervals:
• Respirators issued for the exclusive use by a worker shall be cleaned and disinfected as
necessary to maintain a sanitary condition;
• Respirators issued to more than one employee shall be cleaned and disinfected before being
reissued to a different individual;
Page 9 of 13
