Respiratory Protection <br /> 1• °° Rev. 1 08/23/2018 <br /> • Respirators used in fit testing and training shall be cleaned and disinfected after each use; and <br /> • The disinfection method shall be appropriate for the respirator type and duration of use. <br /> 6.7Storage <br /> All reusable respirators that are assigned to individual employees shall be durably marked to ensure that <br /> each employee uses his/her own respirator after cleaning. <br /> All respirators shall be stored to protect them from damage, contamination, dust, sunlight, extreme <br /> temperatures, excessive moisture, deformation and damaging chemicals. Clean respirators will be kept in <br /> a heat-sealed or reusable plastic bag. <br /> 6.8inspection <br /> Employees shall inspect their respirators before each use and during cleaning for proper function, <br /> tightness of connections, and the condition of the all parts. <br /> SCBA, including regulator and warning devices, shall be inspected monthly for proper function. Air and <br /> oxygen cylinders shall be maintained in a fully charged state and shall be recharged when the pressure <br /> falls to 90% of the manufacturer's recommended pressure level. <br /> 6.9Repairs <br /> CDIM will remove from service any respirators that fail an inspection or are otherwise found to be <br /> defective. Defective respirators will be discarded, repaired, adjusted in accordance with the following <br /> procedures: <br /> • Repairs or adjustments to respirators will be made only by appropriately trained personnel, using <br /> only NIOSH-approved parts designed for the respirator by the manufacturer; <br /> • Repairs shall be made according to the manufacturer's recommendations including <br /> recommendations regarding the type and extent of repairs to be performed; and <br /> • Valves, regulators, and alarms shall be adjusted or repaired only by the manufacturer or by a <br /> technician trained by the manufacturer. <br /> 6.10 Breathing Air Quality and Use <br /> Employees using supplied-air respirators and SCBA must be supplied with breathing gases of high purity. <br /> Compressed air, compressed oxygen, liquid air, and liquid oxygen used for respiration must comply with <br /> the following specifications: <br /> • Compressed and liquid oxygen shall meet the United States Pharmacopoeia requirements for <br /> medical or breathing oxygen; and <br /> • Compressed breathing air shall meet at least the requirements for Grade D breathing air <br /> described in ANSI/Compressed Gas Association Commodity Specification for Air, G-7.1-1989. <br /> Compressed oxygen must not be used in atmosphere-supplying respirators that have previously used <br /> compressed air. <br /> Cylinders used to supply breathing air to respirators must meet the following requirements: <br /> • Cylinders must be tested and maintained as prescribed in the Shipping Container Specification <br /> Regulations of the Department of Transportation (49 CFR part 173 and part 178); <br /> • Cylinders of purchased breathing air have a certificate of analysis from the supplier that the <br /> breathing air meets the requirements for Grade D breathing air; and <br /> Page 10 of 13 <br />
