North County Recycling Center and Sanitary Landfill
Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan

Page 23
Table 6.1.7.B – E. Coli Source Testing Results

Certainly, runoff from the recycling center and
maintenance equipment has the potential to have
E.Coli. However, some of the significant non-
industrial sources of E.coli have been identified and
include cattle grazing in the north non-industrial
(mitigation) areas of the facility, sheep grazing for
vegetation control on the capped landfills, numerous
water fowl that make their residence within the ponds
at the landfill, and native mammals that include
rodents, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and opossums.
South of the service center there is a septic leach
field; however, being underground and it is not likely
a source or significant source of E.Coli. As reflected in
the pollutant source sampling and confirmed by visual
observation, the adjacent and nearby wild and domesticated animals are the likely the sources
for the presence of E.Coli.

Sample # Sample Location Description E. Coli (MPN/100ml)
1 North: No industrial activity, no contact with runoff from
the landfill, sample collected from standing water in the
pastureland for cattle and wildlife
<100
2 North West: Sample collected from Paddy Creek down
gradient of SW-3 and SW-4
750
3 North East: No industrial activity, no contact with
runoff from the landfill, sample collected from standing
water in the pastureland for cattle and wildlife
155,310
4 Big Pond: Sample collected from the Interim
Sedimentation Basin, upgradient of SW-3
850
5 Small Pond: Sample collected from the Small Pond
which receives runoff from the Recycling Center and
Maintenance Building.
2,030
6 Entry into Big Pond: Sample collected from water
flowing into the Interim Sedimentation Basin.
26,130
7 Barajas Pond: Sample collected from standing water in
the green waste area pond.
34,480
8 Southwest: Sample collected from water discharging
into the drainage swale from the capped landfill drainage
swales.
520
Figure 14 – North non-industrial mitigation area with numerous cow feces on the ground
