31 August 2018 AdvancedGeo
AGE Project No. 14-3002 Environmental
Additionally, once the waste cells that extend on to the site are located and identified,
additional borings (step-out) will be advanced to define the limits of the waste cells. Step-
out borings will be advanced until native soil is encountered defining the waste cell limits.
3.2.2. Soil and Groundwater Sampling
Soil samples and potential waste samples (if encountered) will be collected from the
borings using a 1 .5-inch or 2-inch diameter Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with
a two-foot or four-foot acetate liner. Soil samples will be collected continuously between
the surface and 15 feet bsg in the investigation area and from the borings surrounding
the identified waste limits; and if necessary, soil samples will also be collected from all
additional borings for confirmation. Any discolored soil or waste encountered during field
operations will also be sampled and analyzed.
Upon sample retrieval, the full liner, or portion of, will be covered with Teflon sheets,
capped, and sealed with tape. Sealed and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled
container under ice for subsequent transport under chain-of-custody procedure to a
California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP)-certified laboratory.
Soils and waste encountered in the borings will be visually classified by AGE personnel
in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) or type of materials
encountered. Additionally, soil samples will be field-screened for the presence of volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) using an organic vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-
ionization detector (PID) calibrated to isobutylene.
For the collection of grab groundwater samples, soil borings will be advanced to the top
of the groundwater table as identified by collection of a saturated soil sample. The depth
to groundwater will be determined in the field. However, based on information from
surrounding subsurface investigations (borings and wells), the depth to groundwater is
estimated at 15 feet bsg. Once groundwater has been encountered, a Geoprobe (or
similar) push-driven water sampling device will be advanced into the water-bearing zone.
Grab groundwater samples will be collected using a Geoprobe water sampling assembly
fitted with a pre-cleaned, one-inch diameter 0.01-slotted temporary well screen. Each
groundwater sample will be extracted by dedicated disposable polyethylene tubing
through the hollow center of the push rods into the screen section. Groundwater samples
will be collected into laboratory-supplied, non-preserved 40-ml Volatile Organic Analysis
(VOA) vials and other laboratory-supplied containers as required by the analytical suite.
The samples will be placed in a chilled container under ice for subsequent transport under
chain-of-custody procedure to a California ELAP-certified laboratory.
Prior to use, all sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with
clean water after being washed with a solution of Alconox. All probe tooling and rods will
be cleaned prior to advancement at each probe boring location.
