locations, refuse workers separate the recyclable materials by hand and dispose in the
designated 40-yard recycle bins.
Source separated recyclable materials unloaded in the MRF are pushed to the south end of the
tipping floor and then loaded into transfer trucks for delivery to the appropriate recycler.
Recyclable materials unloaded in the self-haul recycling area will be processed according to
material type. Bins will be picked up by a roll-off truck and taken to the appropriate staging and
processing area as needed. Materials will be taken to the tipping floor to be sorted as needed
and pushed into larger bins. Materials will be loaded for delivery to the appropriate recycler.
Food waste arriving at LTS is source separated and will be handled according to the FWPOP
(Appendix G).
Prohibited wastes identified by MRF staff or equipment operators are separated and disposed of
in the designated method. If hazardous wastes or spills are discovered, then MRF staff or
equipment operators will notify Solid Waste Recovery Supervisors immediately. Lovelace
hazardous waste program procedures will then be implemented.
2.5.2 Size Reduction
Some non-recyclable material is suitable for direct deposit into a transfer vehicle. Other bulky
non-recyclable material is reduced in size prior to depositing into a transfer truck. Size reduction
is accomplished by compacting the refuse with size-reduction equipment in a designated
compaction area (Figure 5). In that area, refuse is spread in layers approximately two feet thick,
and the size-reduction equipment makes several passes. The refuse undergoes further visual
inspection by the loader operators, then again by the size-reduction equipment operator.
Except for times of equipment maintenance, the size-reduction equipment is parked on waste.
The waste will be compacted and removed for disposal daily.
Size-reduction equipment may include the following: loader, excavator, backhoe, Grizzly crane,
compactor, and other material handling equipment.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report 15 County of San Joaquin
April 16,2026
