AECOM <br /> • Provide assistance to prevent body heat loss, such as: <br /> o Providing appropriate sources of heat(e.g.warm packs, portable heaters, etc.). <br /> o Use of insulating materials on equipment handles when temperatures drop below 30°F <br /> (-1°C). <br /> 4.2.4 All staff working in extreme cold or snow conditions should understand the following guidelines for <br /> preventing and detecting hypothermia and frostbite; refer to S3AM-112-ATT2 Symptoms& <br /> Treatment: <br /> • Ensure appropriate PPE requirements are established and adhered to. <br /> • Avoid exhaustion or fatigue because energy is needed to keep muscles warm. <br /> • Because prolonged exposure to cold air or to immersion in cold water at temperatures even well <br /> above freezing can lead to dangerous hypothermia,whole-body protection shall be used. <br /> • Eat high calorie snacks to help maintain body metabolism. <br /> • Confirm extra blankets or sleeping bags are on-site. <br /> • Drink plenty of warm liquids. It is easy to become dehydrated in cold weather. <br /> • Avoid caffeine and alcohol,which can act as diuretics.Alcohol consumption, depending upon <br /> quantity, can dilate blood vessels enhancing body heat loss or constrict blood vessels <br /> decreasing heat delivery to extremities. <br /> • NEVER IGNORE SHIVERING. Persistent or violent shivering is a clear warning that you are on <br /> the verge of hypothermia. <br /> • If you experience frost bite or hypothermia,find shelter and warmth and contact a medical <br /> practitioner if symptoms persist, refer to S3AM-128-PRI Medical Screening&Surveillance. <br /> 4.3 Training <br /> Before they begin work in a cold environment, employees that might be exposed to cold stress will be <br /> informed of the potential for cold stress and how to prevent cold stress. Employees that have not had the <br /> training within the twelve prior months shall repeat the training before exposure to cold stress, refer to <br /> S3AM-003-PRI SH&E Training. Employees potentially exposed to cold stress will receive training including, <br /> but not limited to: <br /> 4.3.1 Sources of cold stress,the influence of protective clothing, and the importance of acclimatization. <br /> 4.3.2 How the body loses heat. <br /> 4.3.3 Recognition of cold-related illness symptoms. <br /> 4.3.4 Cold stress preventative/corrective measures including, but not limited to: <br /> • Weather monitoring. <br /> • Proper eating and drinking practices. <br /> • Work-warming schedules and proper re-warming techniques. <br /> • Buddy system. <br /> • Safe cold work practices appropriate to the work that is to be performed. <br /> • Proper use of cold environment personal protective clothing. <br /> 4.3.5 The harmful effects of excessive alcohol consumption in a cold stress environment. <br /> 4.3.6 The hazards associated with unstable snow or ice build ups. <br /> 4.3.7 First aid procedures for symptoms related to cold stress. <br /> Cold Stress (S3AM-112-PR1) <br /> Revision 2 July 31,2019 <br /> PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED.
