NvtiQ siAi
FIGURE 1.SCHEMATIC OF SUB-SLAB PROBE
5.1 INSTALLATION OF THE SAMPLING PROBE
5.1.1 Drilling
Drill down into the slab approximately 1 to 2 inches using a rotary hammer drill with a 7/8"diameter concrete bit.
• Clean out the dust using a shop vacuum. Note: Do not use a shop vacuum to clean out the dust from drilling if the
hole extends all the way through the sub-slab..
• Continue drilling down using a 5/16"diameter concrete bit to below the slab.
• Use the drill bit to measure the thickness of the slab and record the value.
Note: If the slab is very thick(e.g., 18"),the 5/16"drill bit may not be long enough to reach the bottom of the slab. In this
case, use a larger, longer drill bit for the entire length of the slab.
Install the probe into the hole, with the tubing already attached. Use the tubing to hold the union at the correct height in the
hole Oust below the top).
• Use modeling clay(e.g., Sculpe brand modeling clay)or other easily worked material to seal the probe in place.
• Avoid using cement(e.g., Quik-crete)as that will take time to cure and the seal between the cement and the probe
can be inadvertently broken when applying torque to the probe to take caps on or off.
n--- c ..r
