HAZARD MITIGATORS - HEAVY EQUIPMENT <br /> Applies to Task: 6 O a® ❑ ® ❑ ® ❑ p ❑ ® ❑ (D ❑ <br /> Working around Heavy Equipment <br /> • Yield to heavy equipment. <br /> • Listen for warning signals on heavy equipment. <br /> • Perform a visual inspection and walk around parked heavy equipment before moving to <br /> assure that equipment is in good condition and that there are no personnel on the ground <br /> that could be injured or objects that could be damaged by vehicle movement. <br /> • Wear hearing protection if required. <br /> • Wear traffic vests for increased visibility. <br /> • Maintain eye contact with the heavy equipment operator when working near equipment. <br /> • Be aware of changes in sound of equipment which may indicate a change in direction or <br /> activity. <br /> Heavy Equipment Operators <br /> • Use hand rails and footholds when mounting and dismounting equipment, <br /> • Follow appropriate equipment startup procedures. Brakes, steering, clutches and controls <br /> shall be tested. <br /> • Pay attention to workers on the ground who may be in the path and provide warning prior <br /> to moving the equipment. <br /> • Permit no one to ride on, or in, heavy equipment. This includes any portion of a backhoe, <br /> bulldozer, forklift or the back of a pickup truck, except in locations specifically designed <br /> for passenger use! and approved by the SHSO. <br /> • Keep haulage; vehicles under positive control at all times while operating. Vehicles shall <br /> be kept in gear when descending grades. <br /> • Do not use heavy equipment on slopes with steepness exceeding 3H:1 V unless operations <br /> are consistent with manufacturer's recommendations (if the Owner's Manual is not with <br /> the equipment or does not specify slope operating procedures, see the SHSO). <br /> Heavy Equipment(rev.)-HazMit.doc Page 1 of 2 8/3/2007 <br />
