HAZARD MITIGATORS - DOGS <br /> Applies to Task: ISO 1p O ❑ O ❑ ® ❑ O ❑ © ❑ O ❑ <br /> • Never approach a stray dog. <br /> • If a stray dog is at your site, stay in your vehicle. <br /> • If a stray dog approaches, back away slowly and proceed to your vehicle or the closest <br /> secure building. <br /> • If a vehicle or secure building is not close by when a stray dog approaches, stay calm. <br /> Do not run and do not yell. If you must say anything at all, use a calm, firm voice and <br /> avoid eye contact. Back away slowly from the dog or stand still until it turns away. <br /> Keep your hands firmly by your side. <br /> • If a dog jumps, raise your knee to protect yourself. <br /> • If a dog attacks, curl into a ball with your hands over your head and neck, and protect <br /> your face. <br /> • Be aware of unusual dog behavior. Stray dogs may have rabies, which is exemplified by <br /> the following signs: <br /> - Constant growling and barking <br /> - Dilated pupils, disorientation <br /> -Erratic behavior <br /> - Facial expression showing anxiety and hyperalertness <br /> - Inability to swallow, leading to drooling and foaming of saliva (i.e., "foaming at the <br /> mouth") <br /> • If bitten or scratched by a dog, seek medical attention immediately. <br /> Dogs-HazMit.doc.doc Page 1 of 1 8/3/2007 <br />
