Ball check valves shall consist of three components: body, cover, and ball--one moving part.
The design of the valve shall keep solids, stringy material, grit, rags, etc., moving without the
need for backflushing. The ball shall clear the waterway providing "full flow" equal to the nominal
size. There shall be no outside levers, weights, springs, dash pots, or other accessories.
Valve body and cover shall be of gray cast iron or ductile iron. Flange drilling shall be according _
to ANSI 1316.1, Class 125. The valve ball shall be hollow steel with an exterior of nitrile rubber. It
shall be resistant to grease, petroleum products, animal and vegetable fats, diluted
concentrations of acids and alkalines (pH 4 to 10), tearing, and abrasion. —
Ball check valves shall be Flygt HDL Type 5087, Golden Anderson Figure 240, or equal,
modified to meet requirements specified in this section.
2.11 PLUG VALVES
Valves shall be straight-flow non-lubricated resilient plug type suitable for drip-tight, bi-
directional shutoff at the specified valve design pressure. Port areas for the valve shall be at
least 80% of the adjacent full pipe area. Valve body seats consisting of nickel for valves
3 inches and larger shall be constructed of a welded-in overlay of not less than 90% pure nickel. _
Upper and lower journal bearings shall be replaceable, sleeve-type, corrosion resistant, and
permanently lubricated. Packing shall be self-adjusting chevron type replaceable without
disassembling the valve. _
Materials of construction shall be as follows:
Component Material
Body Cast iron, ASTM A126, Class B
Plug Cast iron, ASTM A126, Class B, or cast iron ASTM A436 —
(Ni-resist), or ductile iron, ASTM A536
Plug facing Neoprene or Buna-N
Body seats
Less than 3 inches Cast iron, ASTM A126, Class B
3 inches and larger Stainless steel, ASTM A276, Type 304 or nickel —
Packing Buna V-flex or TFE
Unless otherwise specified, exposed service valves 4 inches and smaller shall be provided with
a lever type manual operator. Exposed service valves larger than 4 inches shall be provided
with totally enclosed worm gear operators. All operator components shall be sized for the valve —
design pressure in accordance with AWWA C504, Section 3.8 Manual operators shall have
operating torques less than 80 ft-lbs. Unless specified otherwise, each manual operator shall be
provided with a hand crank. Unless specified otherwise, the direction of rotation of the operator _
shall be counterclockwise for opening.
Eccentric plug valves shall be as manufactured by Clow, DeZurik, or equal, modified to meet the —
requirements specified in these Specifications.
Division III-165 NEI Phase II Water and Sewer —
July 2007 CIP Nos. 7468, 7589, 7590
