• Compliance with cementitious material content requirements will be verified in conformance with procedures
described in California Test 518 for cement content. For testing purposes, supplementary cementitious material shall be
considered to be cement. Batch proportions shall be adjusted as necessary to produce concrete having the specified
cementitious material content.
• If any concrete has a cementitious material, portland cement,or supplementary cementitious material content that is
less than the minimum required, the concrete shall be removed. However, if the Engineer determines that the concrete is
structurally adequate, the concrete may remain in place and the Contractor shall pay to the State $0.55 for each kilogram of
cementitious material, portland cement,or supplementary cementitious material that is less than the minimum required. The
Department may deduct the amount from any moneys due, or that may become due,the Contractor under the contract. The
deductions will not be made unless the difference between the contents required and those actually provided exceeds the
batching tolerances permitted by Section 90-5, "Proportioning." No deductions will be made based on the results of
California Test 518.
• The requirements of the preceding paragraph shall not apply to minor concrete or commercial quality concrete.
90-2 MATERIALS
90-2.01 CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS
• Unless otherwise specified, cementitious material shall be either a combination of Type II or Type V portland
cement and a supplementary cementitious material,or a blended cement.
• Cementitious materials used in cast-in-place concrete for exposed surfaces of like elements of a structure shall be
from the same sources and of the same proportions.
• Cementitious materials shall be protected from moisture until used. Sacked cementitious materials shall be piled to
permit access for tallying, inspecting, and identifying each shipment.
• Facilities shall be provided to ensure that cementitious materials meeting this Section 90-2.01 are kept separate from
other cementitious materials. Sampling cementitious materials shall be in conformance with California Test 125.
• The Contractor shall furnish a Certificate of Compliance for cementitious materials in conformance with the
provisions in Section 6-1.07, "Certificates of Compliance." The Certificate of Compliance shall indicate the source by name
and location(including country, state, and city). If cementitious material is delivered directly to the job site, the Certificate of
Compliance shall be signed by the cementitious material supplier. If the cementitious material is used in ready-mixed
concrete or in precast concrete products purchased as such by the Contractor, the Certificate of Compliance shall be signed
by the manufacturer of the concrete or product.
90-2.01A CEMENT
• Portland cement shall conform to the requirements in ASTM Designation: C 150 except, using a 10-sample moving
average, limestone shall not exceed 2.5 percent. The C3S content of Type II cement shall not exceed 65 percent.
• Blended cement shall conform to the requirements for Portland Blast-Furnace Slag, Cement Type IS (MS) or
Portland-Pozzolan Cement, Type IP (MS) in AASHTO Designation: M 240 and shall be comprised of an intimate and
uniform blend of Type II or Type V cement and supplementary cementitious material in an amount conforming to the
requirements in Section 90-2.01C,"Required Use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials."
• In addition, blended cement, Type II portland cement, and Type V portland cement shall conform to the following
requirements:
A. The cement shall not contain more than 0.60-percent by mass of alkalies, calculated as the percentage of Na2O plus
0.658 times the percentage of K2O,when determined by methods as required in AASHTO Designation: T 105;
B. The autoclave expansion shall not exceed 0.50-percent;and
C. Mortar, containing the cement to be used and Ottawa sand, when tested in conformance with California Test 527,
shall not expand in water more than 0.010-percent and shall not contract in air more than 0.048-percent, except that
when cement is to be used for precast prestressed concrete piling, precast prestressed concrete members, or steam
cured concrete products, the mortar shall not contract in air more than 0.053-percent.
• Type III portland cement shall be used only as specified in the special provisions or with the approval of the
Engineer.
