SECTION 02310
HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION
A. Scope
This section covers the installation and testing of dual 10-inch diameter sewer force mains
in a 24-inch steel casing for the crossing under Snodgrass Slough (McCormack-Williamson
Tract), in a single bore for the crossings under Mokelumne River and Middle Slough at the
lines and grades indicated on the plans. The installation of the dual HDPE pipelines in a
casing or a single bore under each waterway shall be by horizontal directional drilling
(HDD) methods in accordance with the plans and specifications. The drilling shall be
performed only with equipment adequate for the length and diameter of the bore, the
required pipe pulling forces and the existing geologic conditions. Directional control
methods shall be employed which will ensure the location of the bore with the required
accuracy.
The directionally controlled horizontal drilling operation shall consist of drilling a small
diameter pilot hole; reaming the pilot hole to a diameter suitable for installation of a pull
section and steel casing where indicated; or installing a pull section and dual pipes; all in
accordance with the specifications. HDD installation under the Snodgrass Slough
(McCormack-Williamson Tract) shall require a steel casing, minimum of 24-inch diameter
with a 0.5-inch minimum wall thickness.
The Contractor shall furnish and install all necessary pipe, fittings, connections, valves,
appurtenances, and accessories to install the pipelines as shown on the plans. The
Contractor's equipment and directional control methods shall be approved by the
Construction Manager prior to the beginning of work. The Contractor shall maintain all
equipment in good condition at all times and shall use all reasonable and appropriate means
to prevent and control loss of circulation and to protect the borehole.
Walnut Grove Sewer Project(Conformed) 02310-1 SAO 160401
March 2009 N:sa0160401vSpecs\WG Conform\Div 2v02310.doc
