A flashing arrow sign shall be used for each lane closed. (where required)
2. Two lane closure signs ( C-20) shall be used on the approach to a lane closure with
speeds of 45 mph (70 Km/h) or greater.
NOTE: This table is based on 12—foot (4m) wide lanes.
For lane widths greater than 12 feet (4m), use the following formula:
Taper formula:
L = S x W for speeds of 45 or more.
L = S x 2/3 W for speeds of 70 Km/h or more.
L=WS2 _ 60, for speeds of 40 mph or less.
L =WS2 _ 150, for speeds of 65 Km/h or less.
Where:
L = Minimum length of taper.
S = Numerical value of posted speed limit prior to work, unless otherwise specified by
permitting agency.
W = Width of offset.
i.e. 40 mph and 19' lane; L= 19 x 402 _ 60 = 507 feet.
i.e. 50 mph and 19' lane; L= 50 x 19=950 feet.
i.e. 65 km/h and 6m lane; L=6x 652 _ 150 = 169 meters.
i.e. 80 km/h and 6m lane; L= 80 x (2/3)6 = 320 meters.
PLEASE NOTE; This Attachment was missing from the August 1999 revision of the Work Area
Protection and Traffic Control Manual. In addition, the following omissions were discovered after
printing. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Page 3 item 10. The sentence should read: When lanes are to be closed, place the lane closure signs
well in advance of the taper. If a minimum of ten-foot (3-meter) lane width cannot be maintained, the
lane must be closed.
Drawings 2 —35 Do not show the" • " , which is the symbol for the Traffic Cone or Delineator.
-- --- — — -1Ahle A Revised
