The center pivot rim roller bearings, end jacks, and end jack blocks.
The rim roller bearings consist of six tapered rollers on the north, and six on the west of the center pier.
There are two end jack blocks with live load shoes at each end of the swing span to support the bridge for traffic. Each set of blocks
is driven by a single self-contained hydraulic motor and ram.
There are two end jacks on each end of the swing span. They are electric motor driven screw jacks that lift the ends of the span so
the end wedges can be pulled prior to operation of the bridge.
(06/02/2021) The north west end jack block drive is wobbling when the block is pulled and driven.
**Update (5/9/23) Condition still present
The balance system consists of pivot pier the balance rollers and ring girder assemblies. The steel grid deck is filled with concrete on
the short span side of the pivot pier to help counterbalance the longer span.
Balance system consists of 12 rollers and ring girder on the pivot pier.
The bridge drive system consists of three parts: The hydraulic drive system located at the center pier that swings the bridge, the end
jack block drive systems, and the end jack systems.
Hydraulic Drive System
The hydraulic drive system consists of a 5 HP hydraulic pump and reservoir which powers four brake units that brake against the rim
bearing. The drive also powers four turning (slewing) cylinder rams that rotate the span. Flow control solenoid valves control the
direction of the various rams.
Each set of End Jack Blocks is driven by a single self-contained hydraulic motor and ram. The west end jacks located at the ends of
the swing span, are each driven by a 5 HP electric motor, the east by a 10 HP motor. The motor drives a screw jack that pushes
against the jack seats on the fixed span piers to lift the ends of the swing span so the jack blocks can be removed.
The electrical system of the bridge consists of 5 HP, 3 phase, 240 V rated main hydraulic power motor, two 10 HP 3 phase, 240 V
rated East end jacks, two 3 HP 3 phase, 240 V rated West End Jacks, 2 HP 1 phase, 240 V rated East end lock motors and 2 HP 1
phase, 240 V rated West end lock motors.
The bridge control system consists of lever actuated limit switches and hydraulic flow control valves.
Bridge control systems are located in three freestanding electrical panels on the north side of Pier 8. No deficiencies or problems
were observed.
The bridge control system consists of lever actuated limit switches and hydraulic flow control valves.
