The bascule pits were flooded at the time of inspection. The sump
pumps were working but no water was being pumped out. Due to the water, only a partial opening was performed. Visible portions
of supports for trunnions and other equipment in the bascule pit were in good condition with no defects noted.
601 Support System - Mechanical 2 2 ea. 0 2 0 0
9001 Lubrication 2 1 ea. 0 1 0 0
9002 Wear(Electrical) 2 1 ea. 0 1 0 0
(601) Support System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The bridge mechanical support system consists of three components. The trunnions, center lock system, and the heel lock system.
The trunnions have a tapered shaft and are located on the heel of the span below the deck in the counterweight pit of each bascule
leaf. The center lock system is located mid span, and the heel lock systems are located a level below the drive machinery in the
counterweight pit on each side of the span.
The center lock system consists of two lock bars operated by cams connected to a common drive shaft. The drive shaft is driven by
a series of pinion, and bull gears. The gear train is driven by a Westinghouse 3 HP, 1100 RPM motor with drum motor brake on the
back of the motor. The motor drives an enclosed gear reducer with a single output shaft. The gear reducer is Western Gear 60:1
ratio. The output shaft has a pinion gear that drives a bull gear which turns a shaft with a cam connected to a common drive shaft.
The common shaft pulls and drives the lock bars on the east and west sides of the north span. The bars engage receivers on the
south span. The drive motor and gear reducer are located on the south side of the north span.
The heel lock system consists of two hold down lock bars that fit into pockets on the heel of each bascule leaf. A single, 1 HP 184
Frame, 955 RPM motor drives an enclosed gear reducer which drives a pinion and bull gear. The bull gear drives a shaft with cams
that pull or push on crank arms to lift or lower the heel lock hold down bars.
(601-9001) Lubrication
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The west centerlock gear reducer is missing the top fill plug, the oil level is low.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
(5/12/25) Condition still present.
(601-9002) Wear(Electrical)
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
(06/01/2021) Trunnion bearings made a lot a squeaking noise when the bridge was opened, likely due to lack of use and improper
lubrication.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
(5/12/25) Condition still present.
602 Balance System - Structural 2 1 ea. 1 0 0 0
Printed on: Monday 06/23/2025 03:38 PM Page 6 of 12 29C0022/AABI/153157
