Each recess is filled with concrete blocks and covered with a steel plate and gasket. Additional counterweight blocks are
mounted outside the counterweight on a transverse bracing member. The counterweights remain above the bridge deck during
opening for navigation. The reinforced concrete counterweights were in good condition.
603 Balance System - Mechanical 2 2 ea. 2 0 0 0
(603) Balance System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Balance system consists of reinforced concrete counterweights located below the bridge deck in the bascule pits. Hollow recesses
allow for adjusting the span balance with concrete blocks. Additional counterweight blocks are in the bascule pit. The bascule pits
each have a single sump pump with a motor mounted on the same level as the heel lock drive machinery. The sump motor drives a
shaft down to a submerged pump volute. The sump pumps are 2 HP, 6.4-amp, 220 Volt.
604 Drive System - Mechanical 2 2 ea. 1 1 0 0
9015 Corrosion (Mechanical) 2 1 ea. 0 1 0 0
(604) Drive System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The bridge drive systems are in each machinery area below the bridge deck at the heel of the spans. The drive system consists of
an electric motor, enclosed gear reducer, two motor brakes, open gearing, shafts, and bearings.
Drive motor: Westinghouse 15 HP, 1150 RPM electric motor with attached motor brake. The drum motor brake is solenoid actuated
and affixed to the back of the motor. The second motor brake is affixed to the highspeed output shaft opposing the drive motor. It is
a drum type solenoid actuated.
The enclosed gear reducer has input from a single motor the low -speed side drives shafts affixed to either side with couplers. The
open gear train consists of a series of bull and pinion gears that drive the main drive pinion which drive the rack affixed to the heel of
the bascule leaf. Pillow block bearings support the various drive shafts.
(604-9015) Corrosion (Mechanical)
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Mech/Elect (06/01/2021) The open gear teeth need to be coated with grease. There are many dry gear teeth showing wear and
corrosion.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
(5/12/25) Condition still present.
605 Drive System - Electrical 2 2 ea. 0 0 2 0
9002 Wear(Electrical) 2 2 ea. 0 0 2 0
(605) Drive System - Electrical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The drive system is located in the bascule pits. The drive system consists of an open gear reduction system driven by an electric
motor. Dual motor brakes are used to stop the movement of the span. Center shear locks are driven by an electric motor at
midspan. Hold downs at the live load bearings are driven by electric motor mounted on a lower deck in the bascule pit.
(605-9002) Wear(Electrical)
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Mech/Elect (06/01/2021) Drive Motors: The motors operate normally. The motor insulation resistance value measures less than 50%
below the minimum recommended by NETA.
Drive Motor Brakes: No defects or problems observed.
Hold Down Motors: The motors are drawing more than their nameplate current. The motor insulation resistance value measures less
than 50% below the minimum recommended by NETA.
(5/8/2023) Condition still present.
(5/12/25) Condition still present.
Center Lock Motor: The motor operates normally. The motor insulation resistance value measures less than 50% below the minimum
recommended by NETA.
606 Control System - Mechanical 2 1 ea. 1 0 0 0
(606) Control System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The bridge mechanical control system consists of lever actuated fully seated limit switches and two sets of bronze cams connected to
the drive machinery. One set gives bridge span position indications the other is connected to the heel lock system and gives the
indication for the hold down bar positions.
Printed on: Monday 06/23/2025 03:38 PM Page 7 of 12 29C0022/AABI/153157
