Department of Transportation - Division of Maintenance
Structure Maintenance & Investigations
INSPECTION COMMENTARY
SCOPE AND ACCESS
A non -redundant steel tension member (NSTM) inspection was performed on 05/01/2025 by Lkhagvasuren Batbaatar and Allan Lee from
the Office of Specialty Investigations.
The structure was accessed with the A62T UBIT operated by Stephen Teesdale and with a lift truck. Lane closures and traffic control
were provided by San Joaquin County.
The interval of the NSTM inspection exceeded 24 months due to UBIT schedule and lane closure schedule.
The investigation was conducted in accordance with the Fracture Critical Member Inspection Plan, dated 04/17/2013.
NON -REDUNDANT STEEL TENSION MEMBER INSPECTION
A hands-on visual inspection was performed on: (i) the tension members of the left and right steel trusses including the steel gusset
plates in Span 31, (ii) the steel floor beams in Span 31. No fractures or cracks were found.
There is damage in the vertical member, L2-U2, of the right truss as a result of high load hit. See photo 4.
Minor pack rust was noted at the gusset plates of the lower chord members of the truss.
These defects will continue to be monitored in future NTSM inspections.
STEEL INVESTIGATION DETAILS
This structure qualifies for an in-depth Steel investigation because it possesses the following non -redundant steel tension members
(NSTM) or fatigue prone details
Floor Beams: NSTM,
Truss: NSTM
NSTMI Required Yes Last NSTMI 05/01/2025 NSTMI Freq. 24 months Next NSTM Inspection 05/01/2027
STEEL ELEMENT NDT INSPECTION
Span
Girder Bay
Element
Method
Inspection Result
31
L PP L2
SGP
VT
Minor pack rust evident at interface of gusset plate and lower chord member
31
L PP L1
SGP
VT
Minor pack rust evident at interface of gusset plate and lower chord member
31
RT
L2-U2
VT
Damage in the vertical member due to high load hit
LEGEND:
L = Left
RT = Right Truss
PP = Panel Point
L = Lower Chord
SGP = Steel Gusset Plate
VT = Visual Testing
UNDERWATER INVESTIGATION DETAILS - NOT APPLICABLE FOR THIS BRIDGE.
Printed on: Tuesday 06/10/2025 03:00 PM Page 29C0037/AABB/152574
