Each center wedge assemblies consists of an
external Atlantic Hydraulic Systems pump, reservoir, and fliter, supplying pressure to a pivot based piston that operates to pull and
push the wedge.
There are three hydraulically driven end jacks at each end of the swing span that raise the bridge so the sliding bearings seats can
retract.
There are three hydraulically driven bearing seats or support bars with live load shoes at each end of the swing span to support the
bridge for traffic. These bearing are retracted prior to swinging the bridge.
Centering locks are located at the middle of each rest pier. The center locks are hydraulically driven and engage a receiver on each
end of the swing span. Hydraulic drive systems for the center wedges and end jacks and seats were replaced in 2024-2025 under
federal aid project No. BRLS-5929(229).
602 Balance System - Structural
ea
(602) Balance System - Structural
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The balance system consists of center pivot pier the balance wheels and track assemblies.
603 Balance System - Mechanical
ea
(603) Balance System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The mechanical balance system consists of eight, 15, balance wheels and track on the pivot pier.
604 Drive System - Mechanical
ea
(604) Drive System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The mechanical drive systems consist of three types: The main bridge swing drive system, located on the center pivot pier, the end
jack hydraulic drive system that operates the bridge jacks, seats, and center locks located on the west and east fixed spans, and the
hydraulic center wedge drives.
The main drive motor is a 25 HP 1175 RPM 326TDZ frame, with Eaton Variable Speed Drive.
The gear reducer is Brad Foote Gear Works size 3PH1200-DF, 1100 RPM input, 38.6:1 gear reduction.
The machinery brake is drum type affixed to the highspeed output side of the parallel gear reducer. The brake is thruster actuated by
a Mondel 10MSY/E-ED23/5S actuator.
The right-angle gear reducers are Brad Foote Gear Works size 2 RV1200-D, 28.5 input RPM, 7.79:1 ratio. The gearboxes transfer
power from the main gear reducer through input shafts and out at 90-degree angles to the main drive pinions on opposite sides of
the ring gear.
There are two drive shafts that transfer power from the main gear reducer to the right-angle reducers (new bearings and couplers
2024). There are two output shafts from the right-angle reducers to the main drive pinions. There are two drive pinions that rotate
the bridge around a center ring gear.
The center wedges are each driven by a self-contained Sheffer Powr-Pak Model 35S01-82 1.5 HP hydraulic motor and drive piston.
The end jack hydraulic system is the same on each side of the swing span. The system consists of the hydraulic pump and reservoir
tank, control and pressure relief valves, and the hydraulic piping.
605 Drive System - Electrical 2 1 ea
(605) Drive System - Electrical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The electrical drive system consists of a main drive motor located with an eddy current clutch, center wedge motors, and hydraulic
motors to operate the bridge jacks. There are also machinery brakes that help stop the movement of the span.
Printed on: Monday 06/23/2025 03:39 PM Page 6 of 9 29C0108/AABG/154008
