The center pivot bearing, end wedges, centering pins, and the center
wedges.
The center bearing consists of a pivot base casting, upper pivot casting, upper bearing disc, lower bearing disc, and retainer ring. All
the weight of the swing span is supported by the center bearing during operation.
There are two end wedges with live load shoes at each end of the swing span to support the bridge for traffic. Each set of wedges
is driven by a single gear motor with built in brake, located on the rest pier. The wedges are pulled and driven via a series of gears,
and cam linkages.
Centering pins are located at the middle of each rest pier and are actuated through mechanical linkage with the end wedges.
Center wedges are located at the center pier and are operated with the single gearmotor via open gears and mechanical linkages.
(601-9000) Operation
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The north east corner of the swing span is hitting brush on the shore during operation.
602 Balance System - Structural 2 1 ea. 1 0 0 0
(602) Balance System - Structural
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The balance system consists of center pivot pier the balance wheels and track assemblies.
603 Balance System - Mechanical 2 1 ea. 1 0 0 0
(603) Balance System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Balance system consists of six balance wheels and track on the pivot pier.
604 Drive System - Mechanical 2 3 ea. 1 2 0 0
9000 Operation 2 1 ea. 0 1 0 0
9003 Alignment (Mechanical) 2 1 ea. 0 1 0 0
(604) Drive System - Mechanical
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
The bridge drive systems consist of three separate systems, the span drive, the center wedge drive, and the end wedge drive.
The span drive system consists of single GE 7.5 HP, 1750 RPM input, electric gear motor with built in motor brake coupled to a right-
angle gear reducer with a pinion gear on the output shaft. The pinon drives a series of pinion and bull gears which drive the single
main drive pinion which rotates the bridge around the fixed ring gear.
The center wedge drive consists of a single 1 HP 1730 RPM input, electric gear motor with built in motor brake. The gear motor has
a 32.28:1 gear reduction. The gear motor drives a chain connected to a chain sprocket affixed to a drive shaft. The drive shaft turns
a series of pinion and bull gears which turn a common shaft connected to cam linkage that drive and pull both the center wedges.
The end wedge drive system at each end of the fixed spans, consist of a single 3 HP 1750 RPM input electric gear motor with built in
motor brake. The gear motor has a 32.28:1 gear reduction. The gear motor drives a shaft with two chain sprockets that drive 2 loops
of chain, that drive chain sprockets affixed to worm drive shafts. The drive shafts pull and push linkage that operate the wedges.
The centering pin is raised and lowered by linkage connected to the end wedge drive system.
(604-9000) Operation
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Mech/Elect (06/02/2021) The drive chains for both end jack systems are loose and no adjustment is available. When operating the
end jacks, the chains are slapping against structural steel. Consider changing the idler mounting support frames that are riveted to
the deck girders. Adding slots to the frames and bolting back to the girders will provide a means to adjust the slack in the chains.
(5/9/2023) Condition still present.
(5/13/25) Condition still present.
(604-9003) Alignment (Mechanical)
Non -Routine Inspection Element Notes:
Mech/Elect (06/02/2021) Right angle drive gearbox pinion and gear are misaligned and exhibiting more contact wear at the bottom
than top. Mating pinion and gear should be adjusted to allow even meshing across the full gear width.
(5/9/2023) Condition still present.
605 Drive System - Electrical 2 1 ea. 0 0 1 0
9002 Wear(Electrical) 2 1 ea. 0 0 1 0
(605) Drive System - Electrical
Printed on: Monday 06/23/2025 03:35 PM Page 5 of 8 29C0131/AABI/153160
