0 0 Page 2 of 2
As discussed the tanks are surrounded by a 4-foot high CMU (concrete masonry unit) wall (see attached
photos). Is this wall considered to be a dike, and/or a containment structure, that is designed to hold the
fluids of the largest tank within a confined area? It is for the licensed Professional Engineer to certify.
Additionally, what are the design requirements for above-ground fuel tanks?According to CFR 112.8(c)2
Construct all bulk storage tank installations so that you provide a secondary means of containment for the
entire capacity of the largest single container and sufficient freeboard to contain precipitation. You must ensure
that diked areas are sufficiently impervious to contain discharged oil. Dikes, containment curbs, and pits are
commonly employed for this purpose. You may also use an alternative system consisting of a drainage trench
enclosure that must be arranged so that any discharge will terminate and be safely confined in a facility
catchment basin or holding pond.
Thank you for your assistance.
Gerald "Chip" Jones
Project Manager
Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin
Phone:(209) 460-5042 Mobile: (209) 406-6206
CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE:This communication with its contents may contain confidential, private and/or legally
privileged information. It is solely for the use of the intended recipient(s).
