United States Postal Se*e • Delta Carrier Annex
Subsurface Exploration
Our field engineer or scientist will supervise, log, and sample eight exploratory borings to
evaluate soil quality. Boring locations will be selected based on fild observations;
however, the borings will be spread across the site. The borings will be advanced to a
depth of approximately 15 feet.
The subsurface investigations will be performed using a truck mounted rig equipped with
Direct Push Technology equipment. The borings will be advanced by hydraulically
driving a 1-inch-diameter by 22-inch closed piston sampler designed to allow the interior
clear acetate sample liner to remain completely sealed while driven to depth. When at
the specified depth, the piston tip will be released and the samplei advanced to collect
the soil sample within the liner and then retracted to the surface. Upon completion, the
borings will be grouted with a bentonite chip and a cement slurry.
The soils sampled will be logged using the Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D-
2487). Soil samples for laboratory analysis will be collected in acetate liners. The ends of
the liners will be covered in aluminum foil or Teflon film, fitted with plastic end caps,
taped, and labeled with a unique identification number. The samples then will be placed
in an ice-chilled cooler and transported to a state-certified analytical laboratory with chain
of custody documentation.
Ground Water Sampling
If ground water is encountered, after the borings are completed, 3/4-inch, I.D. flush-
threaded, PVC casing will be lowered into the bore holes. The lower portion of the
casing will have factory machined slots to allow for the infiltration of ground water.
Ground water will be collected using a small diameter bailer and placed in appropriate
sample bottles labeled with a unique identification number. The samples then will be
placed in an ice-chilled cooler and transported to a state-certified -analytical laboratory
with chain of custody documentation.
Laboratory Analyses
Two soil samples from each boring and four ground water sample3, if encountered, will
be analyzed at a state certified laboratory for a fuel fingerprint sea (EPA Test Method
8015M/8020) and halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs (EPA Test Method
8010). All analyses will be performed on a standard one-week laboratory response time.
LOWNEVASSOCIATES Page 2
Envimnmental/Geafechnkal/Engineering Services PXXX
